US warns Egypt on buying SU 35 fighter jets

A bipartisan group of senators asked Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo to address “three issues” with Sissi during his visit this week, including the purchase of the Russian fighter aircraft SU 35.

The senators also expressed particular concern about Egypt’s recent $ 2 billion contract for the purchase of 20 Su-35 aircraft from Russia, which could lead to US sanctions.

“Since the United States is providing significant military assistance to Egypt, we are concerned about the deepening of its relationship with Russia.” This includes a $ 25 billion loan from Moscow to build Egypt’s first nuclear power plant about 180 miles northwest of Cairo.

Senators warned Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri of buying Su-35 fighter jets and possible sanctions during a meeting at Capitol Hill last month.
