ISLAMABAD:

Former SSP Rao Anwar, who was absconding in the Naqeebullah Mehsud ‘encounter’ case, was arrested after he appeared before the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Rejecting his protective bail, the three-judge bench, headed by the Chief Justice Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar, formed a five-member JIT team to probe the allegations against him.

The team will be headed by Additional Inspector-General (IG) Sindh Aftab Pathan. The other members will include Zulfiqar Larak, Dr Rizwan, Azad Ahmed Khan and Wali Ullah.

Rao’s counsel requested the bench to include agency officials in JIT but the court declined his plea. “We are constituting our own JIT,” says the CJP.

Anwar reached the court in a white car, wearing a surgical mask. Security was beefed up around the court’s premises and a cordon was thrown around the entrance.

The bench resumed the suo motu hearing of the case, and disposed off the contempt notice against him.

“You used to act brave, where were you all this time,” the CJP questioned. “You were in hiding, where were you running? Do you not trust the courts?” the CJP further added.

Will not spare those facilitating Rao Anwar: CJP

“I am innocent in the case,” Rao Anwar told the bench.

“You aren’t doing anybody a favour by appearing in court,” the CJP remarked. “The way you wrote the letter to the Supreme Court was inappropriate,” he said.

The court then ordered to unfreeze all his bank accounts, his passport and his CNIC.

On Monday, the CJP had reiterated that those facilitating Anwar, the suspended SSP in Karachi’s Malir district, and others accused in the Naqeebullah case would not be spared.

During that hearing, Justice Nisar said if Anwar appeared before the court, he would be provided security and be kept safe. The CJP also wondered who had provided Anwar help at the airport and stated that those helping him would not be spared by the court.

Inspector General of Police in Sindh AD Khawaja told the court that Anwar was provided with a boarding pass for a private airline.

This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.
