Iran's largest navy ship the Kharg sank on Wednesday after catching fire in the Gulf of Oman, but the crew were safely rescued, Iranian media reported.

No further explanation was given for the latest incident in a region of sensitive waterways, where there have been accusations of attacks on ships owned by arch-enemies Iran and Israel.

State TV said the fire on Iran's highest-tonnage naval vessel started around 2:25 a.m.on Wednesday (21:55 GMT) near the Iranian port of Jask, where it was on a training mission.

The Gulf of Oman connects to the Strait of Hormuz where about a fifth of the world's oil passes.

Rescue operations for the Kharg went on for hours, the statement on state TV said, with all the crew disembarking.

"All efforts to save the vessel were unsuccessful and it sank," the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

In April, Iran said one of its vessels, the Saviz, had been targeted in the Red Sea, after media reports the ship had been attacked with limpet mines. read more

That came after Israel and Iran had blamed each other for a series of reported attacks on cargo ships since late February.

Iran has refused to recognise Israel since its Islamic Revolution in 1979 that toppled the U.S.-backed Shah. Israel sees Iran's nuclear programme as a threat to its existence.

The shipping incidents have occurred since U.S. President Joe Biden took office in January, pledging to rejoin Iran's 2015 nuclear containment deal with six world powers - abandoned by his predecessor Donald Trump in a move welcomed by Israel - if Tehran returns to full compliance with the accord.

Iran's new drone Meraj 532 may become Russian. Iran has tested a new kamikaze drone Meraj 532. According to Tasnim, this kamikaze drone can fly at a distance of up to 450 km and at an altitude of up to 3660 meters, with a flight duration of up to 3 hours. Drone warhead up to 50 kg. The drone is launched from a car, most likely it can also be launched using a starting accelerator. After the appearance of the novelty, Western circles began to say that the new Meraj 532 drone could also appear in Russia, for example, as a new version of the Geranium drones, of course, this is not officially commented on. It is not reported how the drone is controlled at such a distance, it is possible that a communication repeater drone is used. According to General Ali Kuhestani, the drone is easy to set up, which reduces the time of its preparation and increases the speed of reaction and use. The drone is equipped with piston engines and apparently can be produced in huge quantities. Western engineers generally appreciated the novelty, one of the advantages of Iranian drones, the low cost of manufacture.

Launch by Iran of a new strategic missile Khaibar. The Iranian army has released footage of the launch of the new Khaibar strategic ballistic missile, from the fourth-generation Khorramshahr class of missiles. The new missile has a range of 2,000 km and is equipped with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead weighing 1,500 kg. The rocket is equipped with a liquid fuel engine, and the engine itself is located in the fuel tank, which made it possible to reduce the length of the rocket to about 13 meters. The Khaibar missile is the latest upgraded version of the Khorramshahr class of missiles, a type of direct fire missile without the need for final guidance. According to Brigadier General Mohammad Reza, the features of the Khaibar missile are immunity to EW attacks and enemy air defense systems, the ability to use various types of warheads, mobility and the short time required to prepare for work.

Iranian boats are heading towards the US landing ship Bataan LHD-5. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy released a video of its boats recently meeting with the US amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD-5) and support ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Rear Admiral Ali Reza Tangsiri, commander of the IRGC Navy, said US helicopters took off from the landing craft's flight deck but were soon forced to land when Iranian boats appeared. The Commander of the Navy of the IRGC said that Iran and other neighbors in the Persian Gulf can provide security in the region themselves. The video has been shortened.

Final tests of a simplified version of the Karrar tank, first shown in 2017, have passed in Iran. The tank was created by the Bani Hashem company on the basis of the Russian T-72S; it also uses the technical solutions of the T-90MS tank, which Iran previously wanted to buy, but could not for a number of reasons, as well as some design solutions of the American Abrams tanks. The Karrar tank has a laser range finder and an electro-optical fire control system. Despite the apparent similarity with Russian tanks, it has a different design of commander's panoramas and remote-controlled machine gun installations. Another tower and explosive reactive armor units. The Karrar tank can also be equipped with laser and radar irradiation warning sensors. The tank is equipped with a 125 mm smoothbore gun capable of firing anti-tank missiles. The tank can be equipped with a remote-controlled combat module with a 7.62 mm machine gun. The tank uses a carousel-type automatic loader. Tank weight 51 tons, crew 3 people, estimated engine power 1000 hp.

The new Iranian destroyer Deylaman has officially joined the Iranian Caspian Fleet. A new destroyer of the modified Moudge project was built to replace the frigate Damavand, which in 2018 hit rocks and broke in half. The Iranian corvette Deylaman, a destroyer according to Iran's classification, is now the most advanced ship of the Jamaran class series of ships, the ship's displacement is 1,500 tons. The destroyer's hull is built using low radar signature technology. The Deylaman destroyer is equipped with a modern all-round radar with an Eagle Eye phased array antenna, capable of detecting targets at a range of up to 200 kilometers. The ship was built according to a modified design and its exact characteristics are still unknown. The destroyer is equipped with a 76 mm Fajr-27 gun and Qadir cruise missiles with a range of 200 km. In the future, the ship will be equipped with a Nawab short-range air defense system and a Sayyad air defense system. The destroyer's helipad has an increased area. The Deylaman destroyer has four engines with four separate rows of shafts and propellers, which is necessary for greater mobility and maneuverability in the Caspian Sea. The ship can reach a maximum speed of 26 knots.

Iran unveiled the first fully indigenous Arman missile defense system. This complex has already been shown before and even took part in exercises. The Arman anti-missile system was a further development of the Khordad-15 air defense system. The Arman air defense system combines both a launcher and a radar station; previously, a separate truck was used for the radar. By combining missiles with radar on one platform, we increased the mobility and speed of deployment of the complex; it is ready for work in three minutes. The Arman air defense system is equipped with three missiles and a radar with an active phased array; there can be an option without it. The Arman anti-missile system is capable of detecting targets at a distance of up to 180 km and hitting them at a distance of up to 120 km, simultaneously firing at 6 of them.

Iran's Shahid Soleimani-class missile catamarans, review. The Iranian Navy received two more missile catamarans of the "Shahid Soleimani" type, and the fleet was replenished with the ships "Shahid Hassan Bagheri" and "Shahid Sayad Shirazi". Ships of the "Shahid Soleimani" type are multi-purpose missile catamarans with a unique design, low radar signature and made of aluminum. The Shahid Soleimani class missile catamarans have a length of 67 meters and a displacement of approximately 600 tons, they can be classified as corvettes. The design of the ships is based on the Chinese Type 22 coast guard catamaran boat. For their displacement, the ships have serious weapons, which may be different on some ships. Iranian ships are equipped with Nawab air defense systems and Sayyad cruise missiles with a flight range of up to 700 kilometers. Artillery weapons, a 30mm automatic cannon, presumably a 2A42, and a 20mm remote controlled Gatling gun. The ships are equipped with electronic warfare systems. The ship can accommodate a Bell-412 anti-submarine helicopter, and can use UAVs and unmanned boats. The ship is equipped with 4 Iranian engines and has a cruising range of up to 5,000 miles, and a ship speed of up to 32 knots or 59 km/h.
