Germany will receive an extra 131 Boxer 8x8 APCs from ARTEC Source: ARTEC

The German Army is to get a further 131 ARTEC Boxer 8x8 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) under a EUR476 million (USD516.4 million) contract placed on 18 December.

The Bundeswehr already has 272 Boxer vehicles on order, with the new order bringing this total to 403.

In a statement, the ARTEC consortium said that all 131 vehicles will be in a new configuration of the armoured personnel carrier (Gepanzertes Transportfahrzeug). It added that the "vehicles and related logistic deliveries will be delivered from 2016 to 2020 to the German Army".

The contract comes after the German parliament voted in favour of the move on 16 December, and was awarded by the Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) on behalf of the German Federal Office of Military Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw).

It has been reported that the extra Boxer APCs will be used to replace the Fuchs 6x6 APC vehicles in Bundeswehr service. Germany is currently about to complete the final stages of the upgrade of 161 Fuchs vehicles across various variants to the latest A8 standard, which involved a big increase in armoured protection in order to see them through into the mid-2020s.

The Boxer programme is managed by OCCAR on behalf of Germany and the Netherlands, who collaborated together to create the vehicle.

The ARTEC consortium is formed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Rheinmetall. According to the consortium, KMW will be responsible for building 95 of the extra Boxers, with Rheinmetall building the other 36. Boxer's innovative feature is its common drive module and interchangeable role/variant modules. Before this latest order, Germany had ordered four different Boxer module variants and the Netherlands five.
