Depends if the UUV had an umbilical cord or if it was totally autonomous (AUV). You could run neutral buoyancy fiberoptic cables for miles, though it gets harder the longer it is.

what distance are you talking about? IN sub comes at the border of our EEZ staying inside their EEZ they launch a UUV.
