27 July 2015

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has lost 20 combat aircraft in accidents over the past three years, including three Sukhoi Su-30MKIs, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar told parliament on 24 July.

The other fighters that crashed between 2012 and 2015 included 12 MiG-21 variants and five SEPECAT Jaguars.

Parrikar said that two IAF personnel had died and two civilians injured in these accidents, which were caused by a combination of technical defects and human error.

The minister also told parliament that the Indian Army is short of 9,642 officers and 23,909 soldiers while the Indian Navy's (IN's) personnel deficit comprises 1,799 officers and 11,653 seamen.
