@Khafee What do you think would the present be if Gen Zia Saheb didn’t pass away then ? And that he had power for another 6 years ?

Bhutto started it, Zia continued it and made sure it went through, NS and BB lived through (and often used her diplomatic status to umm bring "stuff") it, no matter which political leader we talk about they played their small or big, intentional or unintentional role in it.

I personally don't like Zia. By all accounts he was patriotic and like Musharraf landed in a crisis of not his own making. Afghan war, in case if we had lost, would definitely be the end of Pakistan.

However where Zia and Musharraf succeeded in stopping the advance of enemies, they failed to pay attention to where the future lies.

Zia did the best he could with limited resources and helped defend Pakistan by fighting Soviets in Afghanistan but he failed to consider the consequences of this war on the future of Pakistan. Six million refugees, gun culture, drugs, MQM, radicalization and over dependence of foreign countries left us facing even bigger challenges in peace than what we did during the war. War ended and everyone went home and we were left with a broken, traumatized and radicalized generation.

Had he made long term agreement and had caught on to American duplicity and plans to abandon us with the entire burden and blame on our shoulders we would have been at a much better position post war.

I really think we could have tested nuclear weapons during the Afghan war. Back then they needed us so badly and understood the threat to the very existence of Pakistan that we could have easily walked away with no repercussions of such move.

Again just another military leader and not a visionary leader or a thinker.

The enemies knew the negative consequences for Pakistan by downing Zia Ul Haq at that time and that’s why they downed the plane,
Pakistan has suffered too much due to the death of Gen Zia Ul Haq, Had he been alive, Somethings could have been much sorted out

US accused him of prolonging the afghan war. In their mind it could have ended a year earlier with a face saving withdrawal of Soviet forces. They wanted to safe guard Najib. While during those geneva peace talks, US felt Pakistan was dragging its feet and had a very rigid stance on some points. by Pakistan extension the Mujeheddin as well. They thought , Pakistan wanted to milk US as long as it could.
Case in point, US approved PAF to have E-2C AEW&C aircraft. A demand we had made back in 83-85 for timely interception of intruding aircraft. But PAF wanted the E-3. E-2C radar had issue with ground clutter reflections. US was dragging its feet to release E-3 for Pakistan expecting the war to end soon. They felt, it was one of the reason, Pakistan was stalling even though Soviets had almost agreed to withdraw.

Read up Charlie Wilson's War last few chapters.
