I recently read that the Russian Federation has adopted the modernized AK-12 for their elite forces. Some details:
Manufacturer: Izhmash
Caliber: 5.45×39mm Soviet
Cyclic Rate: 650 rounds/min (Full Auto Mode) / 1000 rounds/min (3 Round Burst Mode)
Magazine Capacity: 30-Round Standard, 60-Round "casket" Magazine, or 95-Round Drum
Length: 945mm
Weight: 3.3 kg
It appears to be an essentially product improved version of the venerable AK family. It features better ergonomics, polymer furniture, and the ability to mount optics and accessories. It may not be a huge step forward, and the rifle is in competition with the AEK-971, but it is an interesting development.
