'Terrorist' explosion in Manhattan injures 4; suspect named
By Ed Adamczyk and Danielle Haynes

Dec. 11 (UPI) -- An explosion in a subway near New York City's Port Authority during the Monday morning commute was an attempted "terrorist attack," Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

The explosion occurred just after 7 a.m. in the area of 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue in midtown Manhattan.

New York City police said a man with "wires coming out of him" was arrested in the subway. Police later said a pipe bomb is suspected, adding that the man appeared to be wearing a low-level explosive under his clothes. It detonated as he walked through a tunnel beneath the Port Authority building.

New York City Police Department Commissioner James O'Neill identified the suspect as Akayed Ullah. The 27-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant lived in Brooklyn and was inspired by the Islamic State, he said.

"Preliminary investigation at the scene indicates this individual was wearing an improvised low-tech explosive device attached to his body," O'Neill said. "He intentionally detonated that device."

Authorities said Ullah was injured in the explosion and was hospitalized.

The Fire Department of New York said four bystanders were injured, but none seriously.

Subways in the area were evacuated and the trains were forced to bypass the nearby Times Square station.

De Blasio called the incident "a terrorist attack," but said there are no other known threats against the city. He added that security in Manhattan will be enhanced on Monday.

Bombing suspect Akayed Ullah

What do we know about the man suspected of trying to bomb New York City's main bus terminal?

The suspected bomber was 27-year-old Akayed Ullah, according to New York City Police Commissioner James O'Neill.

Mr O'Neill said he was wearing an "improvised, low-tech, explosive device attached to his body", which he detonated intentionally.

The bomber suffered burns and other wounds and was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.

Ullah came from Chittagong, Bangladesh and entered the US with his parents and siblings in February 2011 on an immigrant visa, according to CBS News.

He became a permanent US resident, living in Brooklyn, New York City. Bangladeshi police said he last visited the country on 8 September.

Law enforcement officials in the US told the Associated Press that Ullah was inspired by the Islamic State group - but had not had direct contact with them.

Mr O'Neill said Ullah "did make statements but we're not going to talk about that right now".

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission told CNN that Ullah held a taxi driver's licence from March 2012 to March 2015.

He did not drive a New York yellow taxi or for Uber.

The Inspector General of Police in Bangladesh, AKM Shahidul Haque, said Ullah had no criminal record in Bangladesh.

Authorities have released the first image of the suspect in theexplosion at New York City's Port Authority terminal.

Police named 27-year-old Akayed Ullah of Brooklyn, New York as the suspect. He is accused of setting off an improvised explosive device in the crowded Port Authority terminal during rush hour on Monday morning. Three people suffered minor injuries from the explosion. Mr Ullah sustained severe burns to his abdomen and hands.

Mr Ullah is originally from Bangladesh, and came to the US with his parents and siblings in 2011. Sources briefed on the investigation told the Associated Press that he arrived on a preferential visa for those with family in the US. He later obtained a green card and became a permanent US resident, according to CBS.

The suspect had no criminal history in Bangladesh, where he last visited in September, the country's police chief told Reuters. In New York, he held a for-hire vehicle drivers licence from 2012 to 2015, according to CNN. The license lapsed in March 2015, and Mr Ullah did not renew it.

The owner of the building where Mr Ullah and his family live told CNN the suspect was not particularly friendly. He added that other tenants had complained of fighting and yelling coming from the apartment over the last two days.

Speaking to investigators from his hospital bed, Mr Ullah said Isisinspired him to carry out his attack, according to the Associated Press. He claimed not to have had any direct contact with the terror group.

New York Police Commissioner James O'Neill said the suspect detonated an "improvised, low-tech explosive device" that was strapped to his body with velcro and zip ties. Officials say he assembled the device, similar to a pipe bomb, in his apartment.

The explosion occurred in an underground walkway connecting trains at 42nd St and 8th Avenue. The area is a major hub for commuters and a popular spot for tourists. Attractions such as the Rockefeller Christmas tree and holiday store displays draw crowds of visitors to the area in the winter months.

Authorities evacuated the terminal after the explosion, which occurred around 7:20 am. Trains were briefly rerouted away from the area during the police investigation. Full service resumed three hours later.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo urged the city's resident's to continue with their days as usual.

“We’re not going to allow them to disrupt us," he said. "That is exactly what they want, and that is exactly what they’re not going to get."

A bomb has exploded on a Manhattan subway platform leaving four people injured in a suspected-Isil-inspired attack.

The suspected bomber is Akayed Ullah, a 27-year-old Bangladeshi national who is thought to have lived in the US for seven years.

Ullah, who lived in Brooklyn, was armed with a five-inch metal pipe bomb and battery pack as he walked through a midtown Manhattan transit hub, sources told the New York Post.

The device prematurely exploded which meant it only partially detonated in the right side of the suspect's jacket.

Ullah, who is thought to have been seriously injured in the attack, told officials he made the explosive device at the electrical company where he works, according to the New York Post.

The blast happened on Monday morning in an underpass at the Port Authority Bus Terminal near Times Square - the nation's most crowded bus station.

Ullah had burns and lacerations to his hands and abdomen, police said.

New York Mayor Bill De Blasio has described the incident as a "suspected terror attack".

Immigrant charged in NYC 'terrorist' bombing that injured 5
By Susan McFarland | Updated Dec. 12, 2017

A former New York City cab driver was charged Tuesday for what police say was an unsuccessful terrorist strike at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan.

Akayed Ullah was charged with counts of weapons possession, supporting an act of terrorism and making a terroristic threat for the Monday morning attack.

Ullah, 27, could be arraigned on the charges as early as Tuesday.

Five people received minor injuries and Ullah was seriously burned when an explosive device detonated just after 7 a.m. Monday near the Port Authority terminal. The Bangladeshi immigrant will likely be arraigned while he's still recovering at New York City's Bellevue Hospital.

Deputy Commissioner for Counterterrorism and Intelligence John Millersaid Ullah was not known to the New York City Police Department or FBI's before the attack.

Police say Ullah said he'd chosen the location near the Port Authority terminal because of a holiday poster in a nearby corridor. He was inspired by "[Islamic State]-style Christmas threats," and was angry about bombings in Islamic State-controlled territory in the Middle East.

Investigators said they learned that Ullah had read extremist writings and watched propaganda videos online, which is where he learned how to make bombs.

Monday's explosion was captured on video by a surveillance camera, which shows a quick flash followed by thick, white smoke.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called Monday's incident "a terrorist attack," but said there are no other known threats against the city.

The device used in the attack -- a low-level explosive worn by Ullah beneath his clothing and secured with Velcro and zip ties -- was a foot-long pipe that contained black powder, a battery, wiring, nails and screws, investigators said. Police said the pipe ignited but did not explode.

Authorities say Ullah emigrated to the Untied States in 2011 on an F42 family immigrant visa and is a lawful permanent resident. He worked for a time as a cab driver, but his New York license expired in early 2015.

Neighbors classified Ullah as an unfriendly person who kept to himself. A neighboring Brooklyn homeowner said his tenants had heard screaming and yelling coming from Ullah's home for a few nights before the attack, but did not call police.

Accused Manhattan bomber faces arraignment Wednesday
By Susan McFarland | Dec. 13, 2017

The 27-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant accused in the attempted suicide bombing in Manhattan this week is set to be arraigned on terror charges Wednesday.

Akayed Ullah, charged with five federal terrorism counts, is still recovering at New York City's Bellevue Hospital and may appear for his arraignment through a video link, authorities said. Charges against Ullah include use of a weapon of mass destruction and bombing a place of public use.

The suspect was seriously burned and five bystanders received minor injuries and when an explosive device he wore detonated Monday morning near the Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan.

Court documents state that Ullah carried a 9-volt battery inside his pants pocket with wires connected to a metal pipe. One component connected to the wires was a Christmas light bulb, something authorities say is often featured in instructions online for making a pipe bomb.

Authorities said the device was built last week at Ullah's Brooklyn home, and that he'd stored materials like metal screws for shrapnel. Investigators said Ullah chose the location near the Port Authority terminal because of a holiday poster in a nearby corridor.

Police said Ullah had also been inspired by the Islamic State terror group and was angry about U.S.-led bombings of IS territory in the Middle East.

Authorities said Ullah mentioned President Donald Trump in a Facebook post on the morning of the attack, which read, "Trump you failed to protect your nation." A police search at Ullah's home found the passage, "O AMERICA, DIE IN YOUR RAGE," written in his passport, NBC New York reported.

A news outlet in Bangladesh spoke with Ullah's wife who said she'd called to wake him at 5 a.m. Monday -- and that during a visit to Bangladesh in September, he'd asked her to read sermons by a radical Muslim preacher.

Authorities said they have so far failed to find any links between Ullah and local radical groups.

Trump's policy against immigrants. He had to find a way to shut the door.
