We should also remember that if PAF induct's the J-15 fighter then it won't be unprecedented ... as in 1976 the Imperial Iran Air Force received it's first batch of F-14A Tomcat carrier borne fighters. Iran received 72 of these high performance fighters and has been using them as land based fighters for more than 4 decades.

AIM-54 Phoenix was primarily designed to hit non-maneuvering large soviet strategic bombers.
It more routinely carried the AIM-7F from 1976 onwards.
The F-14 brought range, payload, maneuverability and high speed all in a single package.
The first fighter to do so.
