Airbus has recommended that Germany resumes flight operations of its NHIndustries NH90 helicopters, having assessed that there is 'no short-term airworthiness issue' with the aircraft, a company spokesperson told IHS Jane's on 9 February.
The German military temporarily grounded its fleet of NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopters (TTH) on 6 February citing safety concerns with the Over-Head Control Panel (OHCP). In June 2014 a German Army NH90 operating in Uzbekistan reportedly suffered a short-circuit in the OHCP, which triggered the engine firefighting system.
Airbus (which is the major stakeholder of NHIndustries) told IHS Jane's that, "Based on safety analysis and in line with regulations, NHIndustries has distributed the information and recommendation […] to all NH90 customers through an Airworthiness Follow-up Sheet (AFS) and a service bulletin. Industry has assessed there is no short-term airworthiness issue and, therefore, recommends to continue flights. NHIndustries is launching a modification in order to improve design."
The German Army has to date received 13 of 82 NH90 TTH helicopters.
