People in the wealthier countries of the EU are thinking of leaving it, how do you think they would feel about creating an army for the whole union? Besides that, as mentioned by other people, several EU members are also members of NATO already.

Not only that, the countries within the EU all have very different backgrounds and foreign policies and will not always agree with each other, that is why it was founded mainly as a monetary union, intended to unite the countries' monetary policies.

Originally it was for trade rather than money so the tax tariffs would be lower, however as time went on, some politicians wanted more power which has resulted in what has happened now. Many countries don't want an EU army as it will mean more money and also some still have national service; what if the politicians try to enforce an EU National Service? It would be opposed, that's why the more the EU comes up with these ideas, countries want to leave.

Yeah sorry forgot to mention the trade part, but I agree with the point that the more policies politicians try to implement that force the countries to become closer as one, the less favorable it seems to be with the people. It's understandable too, for example how the people of wealthy countries like Germany are having to pay to bail out struggling economies such as Greece or Spain.
