Azerbaijan starts purchase of cruise missiles

The Turkish company Roketsan will soon sign new agreements with Azerbaijan on the delivery of modern missile systems, Oxu.Az reports citing haqqin.az.

Deliveries of the newest weapons of Roketsan production to Azerbaijan will be continued next year, the company representative said, without mentioning, however, the amount of the contract.

Meanwhile, as it became known, Azerbaijan became interested in small and medium-range cruise missiles SOM-A, which are equipped with an integrated navigation system with GPS, as well as a navigation system for TRN (Terrain Reference Navigation).

In addition, Kasirga rocket launchers (MLRS) are being purchased. They are designed to strike at targets deep in the enemy's
defense, including military bases, concentration sites, rocket launcher launchers, airports and transport hubs, administrative and industrial centers .

A battery volley of 6-9 launchers provides the detonation of 24-36 powerful fragmentation warheads, which ensures the guaranteed destruction of manpower in a circle with a radius of a kilometer.

In short the B versions have INS, GPS, Terrain following Guidance,Optical Guidance and automatic target identification systems on board.
An infrared seeker was added as well as an optional penetrator warhead.
The most important for Azerbaijan is that SOM has an universal weapon integration interface which will enable Azerbaijan to carry them on his Russian fighter planes.
SOM family is one of the most modern CM systems in the world, capable fullfilling network warfare, changing target data on the fly and is high ECM resistant.

Yes Roketsan claims on his own company website that Turkish F-16s and F-4s can use it. But the most important , they claim that SOM has an Universal interface ( emulator) which makes SOM unique and can be used with other fighters.

When a missile is launched from altitude i.e 20,000ft or above, it's range dramatically increases.

The range of 250km+ could actually translate into 350km~400km.

Turkish SOM cruise missiles with KALE - Aerospace turbojets will enter service mid 2018. No restrictions for export left.

The engines will equip ATMACA ship to ship and land to land variant too.
