JEDDAH: As weather experts predict that this winter will be one of the harshest for Riyadh in years, some residents of a neighborhood in the capital are helping those in need.

A video has gone viral on Twitter showing pictures of blankets hanging on trees in Al-Rayyan district for those in need to keep warm.
Sultan Al-Mousa, who tweeted the video, said he hopes it will encourage more such initiatives.

But as the neighborhood is considered well-off, there has been criticism that the gesture could have had a bigger impact in poverty-stricken areas such as Al-Oud, Al-Bathaa and Manfooha.

“The idea of the initiative should be commemorated, but the placement of the blankets was ill-advised since Al-Rayyan is inhabited by middle-class citizens,” said Riyadh resident Um Yazan.

“The gesture is noble, but there should’ve been some thought beforehand.”

Well that's one carefully thought way of helping others in need.

Like we say in Urdu "Andha bantay raivrian .... apno ko he day" (:-)

This is actually a failure of our society.

In English their is a saying "Charity begins at home". In Islam, it's your relatives, neighbors, friends, colleagues, so on and so forth.

If we all did our duty of helping those around us, this situation wouldn't arise.

Nonetheless, it is commendable, that the donor is doing this without wanting to be recognized.

Yep we are victims of capitalism and its our weakness to accumulate wealth beyond our needs. Contrary to what Quran's message of helping helpless and poor of our society with anything that is more than our need. That is basic deed required ...... and if we forgo our own need and help anyone with anything that is needed by us also ......... is Ehsan ......... one of the attributes that exists deep inside all of us being a human.
