His name was EE-T2 Osório, and unfortunately, only one unit was built.

The story behind the failure.

Back in the 80's, Saudi Arabia wanted to renew its army, and they had a lot of money for it. Engesa, seeing the opportunity with both the Arabs and the Brazilian Army, decided they would invest 50 million dollars on the project. The prototype build was sent along with the Challenger from Britain, the American M1 Abrams, and the French AMX-40. After the tests, the Brazillian MBT had won.During the period, Brazilian military government then changed to a civil government, that leaned towards USSR. Because of these changes, neither the Brazilian Army nor Saudi Arabia signed a contract, and Engesa, with a massive amount of debt went bankrupt. In the end, US got the contract with the M1 Abrams.

It is hard to say one tank is better than the other without a real combat test to put them against each other in fair conditions. Even that might not be accurate. Crew training, battlefield intelligence, terrain advantage, etc. can all play a role in the outcome of the duel. Even when all else is equal, and when you put two exactly same model of tanks against each other, then there is still the fact of luck. ;)

Maybe this Brazilian tank was better than M1 and all other bidders on paper, but I wouldn't say it can always defeat all others in real combat.

It is possible the Brazilian tank was superior than the British and American tanks as combat tests were done. Another thing is that the company could have gone for the level best as view didn't have wiggle room unlike some western companies which have surplus budgets and can afford to rest on their laurels. Its also possible that every weapon has its strengths and vulnerabilities. Any of there factors can make all the difference in the battlefield tactically speaking.
