So what do you think ... how Israel is going to retaliate?

Edit: Not that much freedom of action anymore for Israel?

Israel has just launched several airstrikes targeting legitimate military targets along the northern border. The whole issue could be to divert attention from the horrendous attacks carried by Assad on civilines eastern of Ghuta. Israel will most likely carry a few aerial strikes here and there and then de-escalate the situation.

Yes.

Btw, we keep hearing Israel's indigenous weapons industry is so technologically advanced, it's R&D is so good. The Syrian conflict seems to be proving otherwise.

And what if they lose another one or two jets? They remained sorts of invincible in the region, but now a war torn country like Syria has downed their jet ........ a big blow to the ego ......

What was title of that media thread involving F-22 again?

No more invincible .............. geopolitics is such a sh*tty business. This conflict has serious implications now beyond that region.

Their Tech is not anymore advanced than the US / Europe, since it is either stolen or emotionally blackmailed into a JV. Without US funding and tech support it's R&D would be a big Zero as well.

Israeli F-16I Sufa Crashes After Coming Under Massive Anti-Aircraft Fire From Syrian Air Defense
Feb 10 2018
By David Cenciotti

Iranian UAV that infiltrated the Israeli airspace is shot down by an AH-64 Apache. Then, Israeli Air Force jets launch retaliatory air strikes in Syria. An F-16I is hit and crashes in northern Israel. Two pilots eject, one is seriously injured.
“On February 10, 2018, an Apache helicopter successfully intercepted an Iranian UAV that was launched from Syria and infiltrated Israel. The aircraft was identified by the Aerial Defense Systems early on and was under surveillance until the interception. In response, IDF attacked the Iranian aircraft’s launch components in Syrian territory,” says an Israeli Defense Force release.

Here’s the footage of the downing of the drone:
Drone-shot-down.jpg

The UAV shot down on Feb. 10 bears much resemblance with the drone (based on the captured RQ-170) unveiled by Iran in 2016.

Still, what happened later is possibly more important:

“Later, also in response to the Iranian UAV that was launched at Israeli territory and was intercepted by the IDF, Israeli Air Force (IAF) aircraft targeted 12 targets in Syria, including three aerial defense batteries and four Iranian targets that are part of Iran’s military establishment in Syria. During the attack, multiple anti-aircraft missiles were fired at IAF aircraft. The two pilots of an F-16 ejected from the aircraft as per procedure, one of whom was seriously injured and taken to the hospital for medical treatment.”

According to the first reports the F-16 was a Sufa and several SA-5 and SA-17 were launched at the Israeli jets, but there is no official confirmation. Actually the wording used by the IDF is worth of note: they don’t even explicitly say that the aircraft was “hit”, even though it seems pretty obvious. Interestingly, the Israeli military clearly stated the SAM fired at the Israeli Sufa was definitely Syrian:

Civilian air traffic suffered some disruption as Syrian missiles were fired in the northern part of the country:

Tel Aviv Ben Gurion opened to arrivals about 30 minutes later. Here’s one of the aircraft coming to landing after holding to the northwest of the airport:

There have been several Israeli air strikes in Syria in the last decades during those the Israeli combat aircraft have proved their ability to operate freely in the Syrian airspace. Reportedly, in spite of several raids, including some pretty famous operations, the last time an Israeli Air Force jet was shot down dates back to the first Lebanon War at the beginning of the ’80s.

H/T @avischarf @MJ_Cruickshank @AbraxasSpa for details and hints.

Israeli F-16 was hit by Syrian missile: Israeli official
February 10, 2018 / 8:47 PM / Updated an hour ago
Reuters Staff

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Israeli F-16 jet that crashed in northern Israel on Saturday had been hit by a Syrian anti-aircraft missile, an Israeli official confirmed.

Asked by Reuters whether the jet was hit by a Syrian anti-aircraft missile, the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “Yes.”

The jet was back from a mission in which it struck an Iranian installation in Syria that had operated an Iranian drone which Israel said it shot down over its territory, the Israeli military said.

bro it was an updated S-125

Israel air force has begin conducting DEAD/SEAD over Syria. Most of the air defense systems will get destroyed. Israel might use cruise missiles to avoid being targeted by anti aircraft system or fly at a low altitude but considering the terrain this could be tough.

well the Syrian air defense command is not centralized that's why they are having so many problems engaging NATO and Israeli aircraft. They kind of go "crazy" when operating if you know what I mean. It's unprofessionalism at it's finest so yes Israel will have be pretty successful in conducting their SEAD/DEAD ops.
I remember back in 2012-2013, Israel did a SEAD Mission over Southern Syria which resulted in a lost of a Syrian TOR and BUK SAM launchers.

Mattis: Israel has 'right to defend itself' against Iran
By Sara Shayanian
Feb. 12, 2018

Feb. 12 (UPI) -- U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis said Israel has a right to defend itself, after the country exchanged aerial fire with Iran and Syria over the weekend.
"Israel has an absolute right to defend itself, and I think that's what happened yesterday," Mattis said to reporters on Sunday.

"So when Syria, which has made no ... excuse for what they're doing alongside Iran, when they are providing throughout for Iran to give weapons, including more sophisticated weapons, to the Lebanese Hezbollah, Israel has an absolute right to defend themselves."

Mattis' remarks followed a "large-scale attack" by Israel in Syria after a Syrian aircraft shot down an Israeli F-16 jet.

Officials said the attacks began after an Iranian drone infiltrated Israel's northern airspace from Syria. Israeli Defense Forces say the drone is in their possession.

In response, Israeli jets targeted the Tiyas Military Air Base in the Syrian province of Homs, where officials say the drone originated. Two crew members of an Israeli F-16 ejected before the missile struck the jet, while the jet crashed near Kibbutz Harduf in the Lower Galilee.

Mattis said IDF forces acted proactively to ensure the safety of their citizens.

"They don't have to wait until their citizens are dying under attack before they actually address that issue," he said.

Israel authorities are warning that Iran plans to establish a foothold on Israeli's northern border in anticipation of an attack on the Jewish state.

The Israeli government said Iran could use Syrian territory to plan attacks or use its foothold in Lebanon to transfer weapons more easily to the Lebanese Hezbollah -- an Iranian-backed militia group.

"If Iran continues to threaten and carry out offensive operations against Israel from Syria, Israel will teach Iran a lesson it will never forget," Israeli Intelligence Minister Israel Katz said.
