currently right now Boeing is offering the CH-47F and Sikorsky with the CH-53K
many companies in Germany as well as the Army and somewhat the Government, is really eyeing the CH-47F because Boeing promised 10 different companies to help maintain, build and deliver the Chinooks for the Army, while Sikorsky is only teaming up with Rheinmetall for the bid.
however, even if Sikorsky fails in the CH-53G/GA replacement, our Navy is highly interested in the MH-60R as a replacement for the Lynx and again teaming up with Rheinmetall.
I believe Boeing will end up winning this contract, while Sikorsky will win the new Naval Helicopter project just to keep both parties happy.

June 14 (UPI) -- A squadron of F-35A Lightning II fighter planes from Hill AFB, Utah, deployed to Germany for training and exercises, the Air Force announced.

The aircraft, and pilots, crewmen and technicians of the 421st Fighter Squadron traveled to Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, this week, after arriving at Aviano Air Base in Italy on May 23 to participate in the "Astral Knight" exercises with the Italian Air Force. The squadron is expected to remain in Germany for the duration of the summer to participate in exercises with other Europe-based military aircraft.

The training is part of a Theater Security Package, and an element of the European Deterrence Initiative. It sustains the U.S. military's rotating presence in Europe, assures allies and deters adversaries, an Air Force statement said on Wednesday.

The 421st Fighter Squadron is the newest fighter squadron in the Air Force to fly F-35As, receiving its first aircraft only six months ago. It currently flies 12 F-35A planes.

"The F-35 is a challenging aircraft to pick up and move because of the amount of equipment fifth-generation maintenance requires," Col. Michael Miles said. "This experience will allow our younger airmen to see how we put a whole deployment together and will make them stronger, particularly as we move forward with combat operations in the F-35."

Boeing is proposing the CH-47F to the German armed forces as a replacement to the CH-53G/GA fleet. the total requirement is for 40-70 new helicopters to replace the older CH-53G/GA model helicopters. Boeing also teamed up 7 local German companies: AERO-Bildungs GMBH, Aircraft Philipp, CAE Elektronik GMBH, COTESA, Diehl Defence, Liebherr-Aerospace and Reiser Simulation and training GMBH to build parts for the CH-47F, as well as being contractors to maintain Germany's potential fleet. also Boeing is allowing Germany to install Rohde &Schwarz's software defined airborne radio which will provide tailorable encryption, frequency hopping, agility and excellent voice and data connectivity. The German officials and other company owners complained that Sikorsky's CH-53K was not doing enough for German companies, (since Sikorsky was only teaming up Rheinmetall) which is giving Boeing the better chance of winning.

BERLIN: Two Eurofighter warplanes crashed in northeastern Germany after a mid-air collision on Monday, the German air force said, adding that both pilots had managed to use their ejector seats.

The jets, belonging to the German armed forces, crashed near the Laage military base in the eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the air force added on its Twitter account.

“Together with a third Eurofighter they were flying an Air Combat Mission,” the German force tweeted. “The pilot of the third Eurofighter observed the collision and reported that two parachutes descended to the ground.”

Ostseewelle radio, which first reported the crash, posted a video Eurofighter nach Crash abgestürzt | Ostseewelle sent in by one of its readers which it said showed two plumes of smoke rising from separate crash sites at some distance from each other.

Focus magazine said one of the pilots of the Eurofighters — made by Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo — had been found living while the other was yet to be located.

Body found after two Eurofighter Typhoon jets crash in Germany
Both pilots ejected after collision, which took place over Lake Drewitz
24 June 2019

German police have found a body near a crash site in the north-east of the country after two Eurofighter Typhoon jets operated by the military collided during a training exercise.

Both pilots ejected after the collision, which took place at about 2pm on Monday over Lake Drewitz in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, about 175km (109 miles) north-west of Berlin.

One of the pilots was found alive, hanging in a tree canopy. Public broadcaster NDR later reported the second pilot had died. Police confirmed only that they had discovered a body.

The two planes crashed about 10km apart, one inside a forest and the other on a field at the edge of some woodland.

According to Germany’s air force, the pilots were part of a trio of Eurofighters flying a mission out of Laage, near Rostock.

All three planes were part of the Tactical Air Force Wing 73 – known as Steinhoff – a fighter wing that specialises in general air defence and is the chief training centre for Eurofighter pilots in Germany.

The pilot of the third Eurofighter witnessed the collision and said he had seen two parachutes ejecting from the planes.

In a press statement, the Luftwaffe denied rumours that the two jets had been armed with explosives, but nonetheless told the public to stay away from the crash sites.

Germany’s defence minister, Ursula von der Leyen, of Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, and Lorenz Caffier, the interior minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, are expected to give a statement near the crash site later this afternoon.

Germany to ban exports of side-arms to non-allies
June 24, 2019

8459

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany will ban exports of small side arms to most countries outside NATO and the European Union, government sources told Reuters on Monday, confirming an earlier report from the Funke media group.

A small number of traditional allies - Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Switzerland - will be exempt from the ban, the government’s latest attempt to implement the tightened arms export rules it promised in last year’s coalition agreements.

Earlier restrictions on exporting weapons systems to countries involved in the Yemen war prompted howls of protest from Britain and France, since the presence of German components in many joint projects risked harming lucrative export deals with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

But this ban, which is much smaller in scale, is expected to have fewer international repercussions, since pistol, gun and rifle manufacture tends not to be transnational in nature.

While German side-arm manufacturers, including companies like Mauser and Walther, are major suppliers to armed forces and police around the world, the government expects the financial implications of the ban to be limited: export licenses were issued to a value of 39 million euros last year.

The Funke media group also reported that the government was also planning on introducing tougher rules on technology transfer, since small arms are often built under license in the country in which they are to be sold.

Germany to Buy US-made Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missiles for $122M
29 June 2019

View attachment 8655

The United States State Department yesterday approved a possible sale to Germany of 91 AGM-88E Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile (AARGM) Tactical Missiles, and up to eight AGM-88E AARGM Captive Air Training Missiles (CATM) for an estimated $122.86 million.

The Government of Germany has requested to buy the missiles through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) acting as its Agent, Also included in the proposed sale are up to six telemetry/flight termination systems, Flight Data Recorders (FDR), U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support services and miscellaneous support equipment, and other related elements of logistical and program support.

The AGM-88E AARGM is an upgrade to the older generation AGM-88B High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM), which Germany first purchased in 1988. The AGM-88E AARGMs in this case will be manufactured using a mixture of new components and older sections from Germany's existing stock of AGM-88Bs provided as Government Furnished Equipment (GFE).

Germany has requested that the NSPA act as its agent for the FMS procurement and case management to support the AARGM program. The principal U.S. contractor will be NGIS, Ridgecrest, CA. The integration efforts will be via a Direct Commercial Sale (DCS), initiated by the Luftwaffe, between the Tornado Management Agency (NETMA) and the AARGM Original Equipment Manufacturer, Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems, formerly known as Orbital ATK (OA).

Germany through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) – AGM-88E AARGM Missiles

Transmittal No: 19-24
WASHINGTON, June 28, 2019 -

The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to Germany, through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) acting as its Agent, up to ninety-one (91) AGM-88E Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile (AARGM) Tactical Missiles, and up to eight (8) AGM-88E AARGM Captive Air Training Missiles (CATM) for an estimated cost of $122.86 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale today.

The Government of Germany has requested to buy, through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) acting as its Agent, up to ninety-one (91) AGM-88E Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile (AARGM) Tactical Missiles, and up to eight (8) AGM-88E AARGM Captive Air Training Missiles (CATM). Also included are up to six (6) telemetry/flight termination systems, Flight Data Recorders (FDR), U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support services and miscellaneous support equipment, and other related elements of logistical and program support. The total estimated cost is $122.86 million.

This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a NATO ally, which is an important force for political and economic stability in Europe. It is vital to the U.S. national interests that Germany develops and maintains a strong and ready self-defense capability.

Germany will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment and support into its armed forces.

The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.

There are no known offset agreements associated with this potential sale.

Implementation of this proposed sale will require five U.S. government personnel and three contractor representatives to travel to Germany to provide Program Management Reviews. Two visits are planned per year over the next five years.

There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.

This notice of a potential sale is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded.

US call for Syria troops divides German coalition

The US has called on Germany to send military trainers, logistics specialists and technicians to help the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in the fight against Daesh. (File/Reuters)

  • The US wants ground troops from Germany to partly replace their soldiers
  • A clear rejection of the American request came from Merkel’s junior coalition partners
BERLIN: Discord broke out in German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling coalition Sunday, after the United States urged the country to send ground troops to Syria as Washington looks to withdraw from the region.

“We want ground troops from Germany to partly replace our soldiers” in the area as part of the anti-Daesh coalition, US special representative on Syria James Jeffrey had told German media including Die Welt newspaper.

Jeffrey, who was visiting Berlin for Syria talks, added that he expects an answer this month.

Last year US President Donald Trump declared victory against Daesh and ordered the withdrawal of all 2,000 American troops from Syria.

A small number have remained in northeastern Syria, an area not controlled by the regime of President Bashar Assad, and Washington is pushing for increased military support from other members of the international coalition against Daesh.

“We are looking for volunteers who want to take part here and among other coalition partners,” Jeffrey said.

A clear rejection of the American request came from Merkel’s junior coalition partners, the Social Democrats (SPD).
“There will be no German ground troops in Syria with us,” tweeted a member of the interim SPD leadership, Thorsten Schaefer-Guembel.
“I don’t see people wanting that among our coalition partners” in Merkel’s center-right CDU, he added.

But deputy conservative parliamentary leader Johann Wadephul told news agency DPA that Germany should “not reflexively reject” the US call for troops.
“Our security, not the Americans’, is being decided in this region,” added Wadephul, seen as a candidate to succeed Ursula von der Leyen as defense minister if she is confirmed as European Commission chief.

Syria’s war has killed more than 370,000 people and displaced millions since it started in 2011 with a brutal crackdown on anti-government protests.

Washington has two goals in northeastern Syria: to support the US-backed Kurdish forces that expelled Daesh from northern Syria as they are increasingly threatened by Turkey, and to prevent a potential Daesh resurgence in the war-torn country.

The US is hoping Europe will help, pressuring Britain, France and now Germany, which has so far deployed surveillance aircraft and other non-combat military support in Syria.

However Germany’s history makes military spending and foreign adventures controversial.

Berlin sent soldiers to fight abroad for the first time since World War II in 1994, and much of the political spectrum and the public remains suspicious of such deployments.

As well as the SPD, the ecologist Greens, liberal Free Democrats and Left party all urged Merkel to reject the US request for troops.

The US appeal comes after Trump has repeatedly urged Berlin to increase its defense spending, last month calling Germany “delinquent” over its contributions to NATO’s budget.

But such criticisms have more often hardened resistance to forking out more on the military rather than loosening the country’s purse strings.

Former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder told business newspaper Handelsblatt on Saturday that Trump wanted “vassals” rather than allies.
“I’d have liked the federal government to tell him once or twice that it’s none of his business” how much Germany spends on defense, Schroeder said.
“This isn’t a banana republic here!“

US approves $401m sale of PAC-3 MSE missiles to Germany

The US State Department has approved a possible sale of 50 Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3) Missiles Segment Enhanced (MSE) with support to Germany.

The $401m foreign military sale will also include PAC-3 MSE launcher conversion kits, missile round trainers (MRTs), empty round trainers (ERTs), launcher stations (LS) heater controllers, PAC-3 ground support equipment, and concurrent spare parts.

Germany also seeks to purchase PAC-3 MSE shorting plugs, missile canister consumables, missile skid kits, PAC-3 MSE repair and return, and missile field surveillance program (FSP) for PAC-3 MSE.

In a statement, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the US by helping to improve the security of a Nato ally, which is an important force for political and economic stability in Europe.

“It is vital to US national interests to assist our German ally in developing and maintaining a strong and ready self-defence capability.”

The agency stated that the procurement of the missiles will enhance Germany’s air defence capability, while also increasing its lethality against air defence threats. Furthermore, the European nation will be able to meet its Nato commitments.

Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor for this sale.

The PAC-3 MSE, which is based on PAC-3 and an increased range, is the primary interceptor for the multi-national medium extended air defence system (MEADS).
It achieved initial operational capability in August 2016.

In December last year, Lockheed Martin received a $1.8bn contract to supply PAC-3 and PAC-3 MSE interceptors to the US and allied nations.
The company has been selected by 13 countries to deliver the missile systems.
