I persoanlly don't think India is going to invade the Maldives. That will put India at risk of international condemnation. By the way how does China get to cross the ocean all the way to Maldives, seems like a long way to go.

At this point, there is no question of India invading anybody. Except for the misadventure of the IPKF, where we thought everybody was glad to see us arrive as a peace-keeping force between all the parties, there have been few occasions to do so in the past thirty years, one generation ago. It will be extremely unwise to interfere in their affairs, when it is clearly a fraternal squabble and there is little or no bloodshed.

China will have to sail from her bases on the banks of the South China Sea, through the Straits of Malacca, to the south of Sri Lanka, and then a few degrees north to land in the Maldives: a very long way.
