Ladakh face-off | Days after clash, China frees 10 Indian soldiers
June 18, 2020

Nation’s salute: Army personnel and the public paying tributes to havildar Sunil Kumar in Patna on Thursday. He was among the 20 soldiers killed by the Chinese at Galwan.

The release follows agreement at Major General-level talks; no troops missing in action, says Army.

Three days after clashes in the Galwan Valley of Ladakh left 20 Indian soldiers dead, the Chinese on Thursday evening released 10 Indian Army personnel, including a Lieutenant Colonel and three Majors, from their custody.

A security source told The Hindu that all 10 persons were released around 5 p.m. after an agreement was reached at the Major General-level talks on Wednesday evening and they were returned unharmed.

Ladakh face-off | China’s People’s Liberation Army planned attack in Galwan for at least two days, says senior government official

Separately, the Army clarified in a statement that there were “no Indian troops missing in action”.

‘Soldiers were armed’
In another development, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the Indian troops, who were outnumbered and attacked by the Chinese side, carried arms.

“All troops on border duty always carry arms, especially when leaving post. Those at Galwan on June 15 did so. Long-standing practice (as per 1996 & 2005 agreements) not to use firearms during faceoffs,” Dr. Jaishankar said on Twitter, in response to a tweet from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Article VI of the 1996 agreement between India and China on “Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs) in the military field along the Line of Actual Control in the India-China border areas” says, “Neither side shall open fire, cause bio-degradation, use hazardous chemicals, conduct blast
operations or hunt with guns or explosives within two kilometers from the line of actual control. This prohibition shall not apply to routine firing activities in small arms firing ranges.”

Commenting on the 1996 agreement, former Northern Army Commander Lt. Gen. H.S. Panag said these agreements apply to border management and not while dealing with a tactical military situation. “Lastly when lives of soldiers or security of post/territory threatened, Commander on the spot can use all weapons at his disposal including artillery,” he said on Twitter.

The third round of talks at the Major General-level were held in the Galwan area. Specific outcomes from Thursday’s meeting were not immediately known, but a source said the talks were positive and there would be more meetings in the coming days. The effort was to reduce tensions on the ground and implement the consensus agreed on June 6 for de-escalation, the source added.

The Army had stated that both sides had disengaged from the site of the clash. However, both sides continue to retain a large number of troops in the general Galwan area following the build-up along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) after the violent scuffle at Pangong Tso on May 5 and the standoff since.

In the first combat fatalities in 45 years along the LAC, 20 Indian soldiers were killed in a clash after they were attacked by Chinese troops. About 80 Indian troops were also injured and all of them are said to be stable.

The Chinese PLA Western Theatre Command spokesman Senior Colonel Zhang Shuili said on Tuesday that the clash in the Galwan Valley had led to casualties on both sides, but so far China has not revealed the number of any dead or wounded.

The Foreign Ministers of the two countries held a telephone conversation on Wednesday in an effort to reduce tensions following the killing of the Indian soldiers.

Ladakh face-off | Grief, anger in villages of slain Bihar soldiers
June 19, 2020 01:14 IST

Paying homage: Army personnel paying tribute to the mortal remains of the Bihar jawans, who were killed in the Galwan clash, in Patna, on Thursday.

Five soldiers from the State were among those killed in the Galwan border in Ladakh in a clash with Chinese soldiers on Monday night
As the funeral procession of Army Havildar Sunil Kumar began from his ancestral home in Tarapur village of Bihta, near Patna, on Thursday, his inconsolable wife Ritika Devi and 12-year-old daughter Sonali Kumari came out of the house and saluted him, braving tears and grief. “The government must avenge my husband’s martyrdom,” said Ritika Devi.

Sunil Kumar was among the five from Bihar who were killed in the Galwan border in Ladakh in a clash with Chinese soldiers on Monday night. His body arrived in Patna on Wednesday evening.

Thousands of local people participated in 15-km-long funeral procession to the cremation ground at Haldi Chhapra in Maner on the banks of the Ganga. Youths in the procession carried a 400-metre-long tri-colour amid slogans ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’, ‘Sunil Bhaiya amar rahe (long live Sunil Bhaiya)”. People showered flower petals on the procession from rooftops. They also raised slogans against China and appealed to people to “boycott goods made in China”.

Elder son Ayush Kumar, 10, performed the last rites at the cremation ground.

Apart from Sonali and Ayush, Sunil Kumar, 35, had another son Virat, 5.

A native of Tarapur village under Bihta police station Sunil Kumar joined the Army in 2002 and his elder brother Anil Kumar too is an ex-Army man.

His parents — Basudeo Sah, 85, and Rukmini Devi, 80, were living in the ancestral village while Sunil Kumar was living near Danapur cantonment area in Patna for the education of his children. “Only few days ago he had called and asked me to take proper care of myself and not to leave father alone…but he himself left us alone,” said a sobbing Rukmini Devi in her home.

Similarly, the house of another slain soldier , Jai Kishore Singh at Chak-Fateh village under Jandaha police station in Vaishali district too was in a pall of gloom. His body will reach the village on Thursday

Jai Kishore Singh, 22, joined the Army in 2018 and was second among four brothers. His elder brother Nand Kishore Singh too is in armed forces and posted at Sikkim. “He was very jovial person and fond of good things in life but couldn’t live life properly...I feel proud that he laid his life for the honour of the country…I’ll send my two younger sons — Shivam and Kaushal Kumar — too to the Army,” father Rajkapoor Singh, a farmer, said.

Mother Manju Devi is inconsolable inside the unplastered modest house. His elder sister Mamata Devi and other women of the village tried to console the parents and family members. “He was too young to die…full of verve and style…we can’t even believe he is no more with us,” said a villager.

‘Will send grandsons to Army’
The scene at soldier Kundan Kumar’s home at Aran village in Saharsa district too is no different. Putting on a brave face, his father Nirmindra Yadav, a farmer, said, “this must not be the end…I still have two grandsons and will send them to the Army”. Kundan Kumar’s sons are five and three years old.

Grief prevails at the residence of another soldier Aman Kumar Singh, 24, at Sultanpur village under Mohiuddinagar block in Samastipur district. “At least the government should make our 18-year-old youngest son join the Army so that he can too serve the country and take revenge at the enemy country,” father Sudhir Kumar Singh said in quivering voice. Kundan Kumar Singh was married in February 2019 and had last visited home in February this year. His wife Minu Devi and mother Renu Devi have been given medical assistance ever since the news was broken to them on Wednesday.

Another soldier Chandan Kumar hailed from Kora-Gyanpura village under Jagdishpur block of Bhojpur district. The youngest among four brothers and four sisters, he was to get married in April, but the ceremony was postponed due to the lockdown. Heartbroken yet feeling proud of his son’s death, father Hridanand Singh, a farmer, said all his four sons were in the Army. “Chandan was my fourth and youngest son who joined Army in 2017…I’m heartbroken over his death but feel proud that he gave his life for the honour of the country…I hope the government and Army will avenge the death of Chandan,” he said while breaking into tears in a television news broadcast.

Breaking news :

China will release ten Indian soldiers .

according to BBC this puts government in a very awkward position as both Modi and his army denied missing any soldiers .
These ten soldiers included a Colonel and 3 majors.......shameful for the Modi govt they should have acknowledged that 10 men are missing...

Modi must be praying instead of this international humiliation, China should have killed them and remain quite as they still are

Update on China-India Stand-Off ?? ??
?

Chinese army has also captured an Indian army base 10-12 km from the McMahon Line (BJP MP Tapir Gawar).

The Chinese army has captured a large area of Arunachal Pradesh's "Upper Sovanshiri" district from the Indian Army's control (Bicha, Achapila and Langju). Indian Army camp at Achapila is under Chinese control.

Daporijo is the disputed area of Maza and Asaphila along with LAC.It is located beside the river Subansiri, one of the principal rivers of Arunachal Pradesh.

Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has built a major strategic bridge at Daporijio. This connect Arunachal Pradesh with rest of India. It is one of two bridges (one at Tamin) which connects Forward bases and villages with rest of India.

- Bridge built in only 27 days in April 2020.
- Upgraded the bridge from class 24 to class 40 tons
- Vital for supply of ammunition, reinforcement, food, construction material for infrastructure.

- Heaviest loads such as artillery guns can be taken forward along the LAC.
