The Chinese Navy PLAN -Peoples Liberation Army Navy tested a next generation SLBM (Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile) Ju Lang 3 / JL-3 - Giant Wave 3, in the early hours of Sunday 2nd June 2019, in the Bohai Sea.
The solid fuel JL-3 SLBM was launched from the latest Type 094G class sub, but is intended, for the newer, more stealthier Type 096 subs to be inducted soon.
The new Next Generation JL-3 SLBM is reported to have a min range of 8,000 nautical miles or 14,800+ Km's. It is equipped with 10 independently guided nuclear warheads, each with a min yield of 35kt.
The first test of the JL-3 was held in the last week of November 2018. I believe this latest test was to ascertain newer parameters, including new smart warheads, capable of dodging anti-ballistic missile defence systems, navigation / INS, accuracy i.e. CEP, Range and cold launch system.
