The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) will deploy a range of naval vessels into the Indian Ocean region in the future, said a senior military official during a press conference on 29 January.

The comment by Senior Colonel Yang Yujun, a spokesperson at China's Ministry of National Defense (MND), comes against the backdrop of increased PLAN deployments to the region since it first took part in international counter-piracy efforts off Somalia in 2008. Since then, the PLAN has progressively expanded the frequency and type of naval vessels - the latter now to include submarines - that it sends to the Indian Ocean.

"In the future, the Chinese military will send different kinds of naval ships to take part in the naval escort missions in accordance with the situation and the requirement to fulfil the task," Col Yang told reporters.

The colonel was responding to a question on the PLAN's submarine movements in the Indian Ocean and described the service's intended deployments as "normal activities" and that "there is no need to read too much into them".

"The Chinese military has sent various kinds of naval ships to the Gulf of Aden and the waters off the Somali coast to conduct escort missions since 2008 - and in the process, we have notified relevant countries of the escort missions of the PLA naval ships, including the PLA naval submarines", said Col Yang, although he did not name the countries.

I think that's a step in the right direction given the increased rate of piracy in the Indian ocean. Armed militants have stepped up their attacks on freight ships carrying merchandize and it's only logical to provide them with some sort of security escort as they traverse the vast ocean.I hope other nations will follow suit and join hands in tackling this global threat posed by these modern day pirates.

Why again China? Why? Is it again for their expansion. China keeps trying to extend itself. Before I wonder why, now I don't. They want to extend their territories first for military bases. Second to get an economic grip at those countries and have their economy benefit from it. Third is to make them appear strong and powerful. They wanted to be influencial, and the way to do that is territorial and military dominance as they think.

Rather than engage in all those shady dealings with NoKor and Russia and waste their time grabbing territories that have nothing to do with them, China should just focus on activities that promote peace across borders such as deploying PLAN counter-piracy warships to facilitate escort missions. Given their growing economic and political influence, there's so much good they can do with their military. They should endeavor to be part of the solution rather than contribute to this world's endless stream of problems.

Go read the art of war, China does not have any interest in these territories, but by launching some small boat they cause USA to spend more money giving Military Aide to countries like the Philippines. This is ofcourse a perpetial sink hole of money. The biggest risk USA faces is not a military one, but thier growing debt, and increasing trade deficit.

I can't help but say you're super duper mega wrong. Art of war? You're interpreting it the wrong way. More than the art of war, you need real political science background to understand China's movements. Why? Because they built bases on those territories (e.g. Senkaku and Shoal). If they have no interest, if they're simply trying to intimidate the US (I'm sure they're not so blind as to waste their energy on the US alone), why bother to build bases? The US and China have existing financial relations. Neither country is capable of hurting the other at the moment. China lent a huge sum of money to the US treasury for the purpose of bailing out its economy. You should hear what Obama said when he visited the Philippines last year. Enough said.

Well good luck to them with those Somali pirates. Those guys are like some little pests that will just come out of nowhere and catch the biggest vessels off guard. It is full time these scums are caught and brought to justice for their disruption of trade and commerce in the region.
