GE Renewable Energy to Support the Development of Clean Electricity in Pakistan
May 19, 2020

GE Renewable Energy to provide six new hydropower Francis turbines and generators for the Dasu hydropower plant to support the country’s power infrastructure
  • GE’s equipment will help to increase access to clean electricity across Pakistan
  • The project is closely aligned with the government’s long-term vision to bring renewable energy to remote areas of the country
Paris, 19 May 2020 – GE Renewable Energy, in consortium with Powerchina Zhongnan Engineering Corporation Limited, announced today that it has been selected by Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) to supply six Francis turbines and generators for Stage 1 of the new Dasu hydropower plant in Pakistan.

The 2.2 GW Dasu hydropower project is one of the most important power generation projects in the country. The plant will help generate clean electricity, ushering in a new era of socio-economic potential and development in remote areas.

The project will be completed in two stages. The first stage consists of installing a 2,160 MW hydropower plant on the Indus River, which could be expanded to 4,320 MW in a second phase. This project is part of the Vision 2025 Program launched by WAPDA in 2001 and the Government of Pakistan’s Power Policy 2013. Once commissioned in 2026, the Dasu hydropower plant will power around 4 million households in Pakistan.

GE Renewable Energy’s hydro business is responsible for the design, supply, supervision, installation, and commissioning of the six new 360 MW Francis turbines and generators, as well as the governors and control, and protection systems. GE Grid Solutions will provide the Generator Circuit Breaker.

WAPDA Chairman Lt Gen Muzzammil Hussain (Retd) said: “The project is vital to add a major quantum of hydroelectricity to the national grid in order to minimize reliance on expensive thermal generation and lower the power tariff.”

Pascal Radue, President and CEO of the Hydro business of GE Renewable Energy added: “We are proud to start this new collaboration with WAPDA and will support them to develop clean and sustainable electricity in Pakistan. We are also glad to be part of this new hydropower project that will facilitate access to electricity in remote areas.”

China rejects India’s objection over construction of Diamer-Bhasha Dam
May 15, 2020

BEIJING, May 15 (APP):China on Friday rejected the objection raised by India over construction of Diamer-Bhasha Dam and said economic cooperation between China and Pakistan was aimed at promoting economic development and improving the well-being of the local population.

“China and Pakistan conduct the economic cooperation in order to promote the economic development and improve the well-being of the local population,” Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said while responding to a question about construction of the dam during his regular briefing here.

About Indian External Affairs Ministry’s stance, he said that China’s position on the issue of Kashmir was consistent.

The spokesperson said the project was mutually beneficial and win-win for the two all-weather friends and strategic cooperative partners.

Prime Minister Imran Khan had directed to immediately start construction activities of the dam after all issues related to critically important Daimer-Bhasha Dam, including settlement, detailed road-map for mobilization of financial resources, were resolved.

The Diamer-Bhasha Dam is a 4,500-megawatt project with an estimated cost of US$ 15 billion and would be one of the largest dams in the world after completion.

The project, being termed as a positive stimulus for Pakistan’s economy, will not only create 16,500 jobs but also generate 4,500 MW of electricity.

The project will also irrigate 1.2 million acres of agricultural land while extending the life of Tarbela Dam by 35 years.

Previous governments shelved this project but just look at the stats. This will be bigger than most of our dams and power generation through dams combined.... and best of all like Kalabagh no Bhutto is sitting there demanding commission ....
studies to update this project have started

Pakistan signs $2.4b Kohala power project agreement with China

ISLAMABAD: A tripartite agreement was signed on Thursday between a Chinese company and the governments of Pakistan and China for construction of a 1,124 megawatt hydropower project in Kohala costing $2.4 billion.
Prime Minister Imran Khan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider, federal cabinet members, Chinese Ambassador in Pakistan Yao Jing, Chairman China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority Lt Gen (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa and representatives of the Chinese company attended the signing ceremony, reports Geo News. It is the largest power sector investment of $2.4 billion in a single Independent Power Producer (IPP).
The hydropower plant, being built on Jhelum River in AJK under CPEC, has been awarded to Kohala Hydropower Company Ltd (KHCL), which is a subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC). Addressing the signing ceremony, the prime minister said it was a “great step” towards foreign investment, and that Pakistan should have invested in the hydropower sector far earlier. He said the country was progressing well when it had been producing hydropower until it started banking on imported fuel, which not only made the local industry non-competitive but also put additional burden on foreign reserves.
Imran said power generation through imported fuel adversely impacted the environment and Pakistan was among nine countries that were the worst hit by climate change, necessitating the promotion of clean energy.
PM Imran said Kohala Hydropower Power Project drew the "biggest ever" investment in Pakistan on a single project. Pakistan welcomed the investment, as it could also set a trend for the country to further move towards clean energy and to reduce the dependence on imported fuel, he said. The prime minister told the AJK premier that the project would also create the much-needed jobs for the youth during the construction and operations.

(Karachi) Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that Azad Pattan Hydropower Project will help create job opportunities for the people of Pakistan.
Addressing the participants after signing an agreement of the hydro power project with China, he stated: "It is a project of China Pakistan Economic Corridor."
The PM said that the government is making the project with its own resources as an investment and not by taking loans. He mentioned, "The Azad Pattan Hydropower Project would help in development of the country."
He added, "With an investment of $1.5 billion-no fuel import, we move towards cheaper and greener power."
Last year in November, Pakistan and China agreed to include 700 megawatts Azad Pattan Hydropower Project under the CPEC. which is to be financed through Chinese currency.
The project is a run-of-the-river scheme on the River Jhelum, in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir, with a capability of four hours of daily peaking.
The project would be located near the Azad Pattan bridge upstream of 720 MW Karot Hydropower Project and downstream of 640 MW Mahal Hydropower Project and would be part of the River Jhelum hydel cascade.
The project would deliver approximately 3.3 billion units of clean, renewable energy in the grid after its completion in 2026.
Being developed under the 2002 power policy, the project would be transferred free of cost to the government after the term.
