Chinese city sounds alert for bubonic plague

Bubonic plague is a bacterial disease that is spread by fleas living on wild rodents such as marmots. It can kill an adult in less than 24 hours if not treated in time, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Beijing: A city in northern China on Sunday sounded an alert after a suspected case of bubonic plague was reported, according to official media here.

Bayannur, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, announced a level III warning of plague prevention and control, state-run People's Daily Online reported.

The suspected bubonic plague case was reported on Saturday by a hospital in Bayannur. The local health authority announced that the warning period will continue until the end of 2020

On July 1, state-run Xinhua news agency said that two suspected cases of bubonic plague reported in Khovd province in western Mongolia have been confirmed by lab test results.

The confirmed cases are a 27-year-old resident and his 17-year-old brother, who are being treated at two separate hospitals in their province, it quoted a health official as saying.

The brothers ate marmot meat, the health official said, warning people not to eat marmot meat.

I think this was the case for all states.
depends, I live in Chicago, we had our fair share of this virus however even though the mayor made "draconian laws" we are now reopening and haven't been on the level we were to start with.
Arizona, California, Florida and Texas were states that very less-restricted laws and didn't care and so on and now they are having trouble cooping with newest cases, in Houston they have rejected new patients because their hospitals are at max capacity. and so on.

I won't post the whole article, but rather sum this up. but the city claims to have "run out of beds" for newer patients saying 200 were waiting for said beds, but in reality the city needs federal aid (like Dallas accepted) to help the local medical staff, yet Turner has only said they need state aid (money). if Turner truly cared for the Houston community, he'd accept the federal aid with federal medical staff coming in but instead has only asked for financing.

so I guess a US Army Medical team and DMAT (Disaster Medical Assistance Team) is arriving in Houston to help fight COVID-19 in Houston but only because Governor Abbot worked with Vice President Pence and the Trump Administration to ensure this will happen

Not too long before we start seeing people infected again. With the amount of damage it does to the body, second-time survivability will go drastically down.
Exactly. I was watching news the other day, a person in his mid 40s had to have emergency lung transplant because both his lungs were totally destroyed by COVID19 here in Seattle.

It's troubling seeing even so many here on WDF going through it. We tend to get complacent after a while. There's only so long you can stay vigilant. This will likely not subside anytime this year.

mayor Turner is proposing 2-week shutdown in Houston, as well as Harris County (Hidalgo been pushing this plan very hard)…. people been wondering if the shutdown will pursue or not, however Abbot claims it won't but Turner is really considering it.
also, I been seeing people who are both in support and against it, but the funny thing is, the people who are AGAINST it are the same ones, questioning why nothing been "done" to even slow COVID-19 in the area

India’s coronavirus cases surge past one million

NEW DELHI: India became the third country in the world after the United States and Brazil where COVID-19 cases have crossed one million mark, official data showed on Friday as authorities struggle to check the spread of the deadly pandemic.

With over 600 Indians dying daily, lockdowns are being re-imposed across the country of 1.3 billion following an easing of restrictions in recent weeks on hopes the outbreak was under control.

Health ministry data released Friday put the total cases recorded at 1,003,382, a jump of almost 35,000, with 25,602 deaths after an increase of 687 -- both new daily records.

India, home to some of the planet’s most densely packed cities, is the third nation to hit a million cases after the United States and Brazil, although the numbers of deaths in those two countries are far higher.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said Thursday that India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are together fast becoming the next epicentre of the virus.

"While the world’s attention has been focused on the unfolding crisis in the United States and South America, a concurrent human tragedy is fast emerging in South Asia," the organisation said.

"COVID-19 is spreading at an alarming rate in South Asia, home to a quarter of humanity."

- Rural spread -

Until now India’s main hotspots have been the megacities of Mumbai and New Delhi, but recently smaller cities and rural areas -- where 70 percent of Indians live -- have begun to raise the alarm.

Goa on Thursday evening became the latest state to go under lockdown, imposing a three-day shutdown and a nightime curfew until August 10.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said too many people were "stepping out to meet people at parties" and there was a low level of "awareness and sensitivity".

The coastal tourist region followed Bihar, one of India’s most impoverished states and home to 125 million people, in reintroducing curbs after IT hub Bangalore did so earlier in the week.

Other areas have also brought back restrictions including parts of badly-hit Tamil Nadu and Kerala -- previously lauded as a success story -- as well as Assam.

But the situation on the ground in Bihar underscored the challenges in keeping the pandemic in check.

The streets of state capital Patna were still teeming with traffic and people after the lockdown began, many ignoring social distancing advice and not wearing masks.

"The lockdown is not being fully enforced," local businessman Ranjeet Singh complained.

- ‘We have no idea’ -

With per capita spending on health care among the lowest in the world, India’s hospitals are reeling.

Frontline staff, especially in rundown state-run hospitals, are working punishingly long shifts with often shoddy protective equipment.

"COVID patients often get delirious. They refuse to eat, pull away their tubes and even get violent with us," Showkat Nazir Wani, a doctor at one hospital in Uttar Pradesh state told AFP.

Many experts say India is not testing enough people or properly recording fatalities, meaning the true caseload is likely much higher.

The tally is "almost certainly underestimated", Gautam Menon, a professor of physics and biology at India’s Ashoka University, told AFP.

"We feel it might be underestimated by a factor of maybe something like 20 to 30... And maybe that number could be even larger. We have no idea at the moment."

Iranian Health Officials Play Down President's '25 Million Infected' Estimate
July 19, 2020

A man checks the temperature of passengers at Imam Khomeini International Airport outside Tehran on July 17.

Iranian health officials have tried to play down President Hassan Rohani's estimate that as many as 25 million Iranians could have been infected with the coronavirus since the beginning of the outbreak.

Rohani on July 18 cited a new study by the Health Ministry in offering the unprecedentedly high number of 25 million coronavirus cases. Iran's population is around 81 million people.
"Our estimate is that until now 25 million Iranians have been infected with this virus and about 14,000 have lost their dear lives," Rohani said in his remarks.

A Health Ministry statement carried by Iranian media on July 19 said the figure given by the president was based on numbers produced by a deputy in the ministry.

The statement said the estimate was based on serological blood tests that measure exposure to the illness.
"It is not possible to rely on serological tests to diagnose the current state of the disease," the statement said.
Serological tests determine if a person has been exposed to a disease by showing their antibody response.

In the coronavirus pandemic, they have been used by countries to survey samples of the population and estimate overall infection rates -- whether or not people have had severe, mild, or no symptoms of COVID-19.

Iran has been hardest hit by the pandemic in the Middle East, with infections and deaths rising sharply since restrictions were eased, beginning in mid-April.

Official case numbers rose to 273,788 on July 19, with 14,188 deaths, Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said.

Authorities on July 18 reimposed one-week restrictions in the capital, Tehran, including banning religious and cultural functions, closing cafes, indoor pools, amusement parks and zoos, in an effort to contain the deadly pandemic.

In related news, Turkey has suspended flights to Iran because of coronavirus worries, a spokesman for Iran's Civil Aviation Organization, Reza Jafarzadeh, was quoted as saying on July 19 by the official IRNA news agency.

@Khafee Here their data also showed out of 265K patients 205 recovered (jang even reported 235K) i sincerely hope so and pray for it but for last 15 days test ratio is very low hope that's not the reason of recently less reported cases
