Damen launches first Pakistan Navy OPV in Romania

The first of two Pakistan Navy offshore patrol vessels (OPV) was launched in Galata, Romania, the Pakistan Navy announced on May 17.
The ship was launched after starting construction in a keel-laying ceremony in April 2018.
While the Navy refers to them as corvettes, the two vessels built by Dutch shipbuilder Damen are based on the company’s OPV designs.

In its announcement on May 17, the Navy revealed that the ships will displace 2300 tons, which indicates that they are based on the Damen OPV2400 design. According to company specifications, the OPV2400 measures 90 meters in length, includes a flight deck and hangaring space and achieves a maximum speed of 23 knots.

The two OPVs are built under a contract from June 2017. The first unit is scheduled to be delivered by the end of the year, according to the navy.

OPERATIONAL CAPACITIES
Spacious bridge, separate OPS room for surveillance and gun control.
Flight deck, hangar and refuelling for helicopter size up to Sea King or NH90.
Wave compensated davits (up to sea state 5) for 2x 9.0 m interceptors / boarding boats (+35 kn speed).
Fore ship incl. store crane facilities.
Below-deck spaces - multi-role or dedicated - for accommodation of survivors or embarked forces, storage of mission equipment and packaged goods.
Aft deck space for 2 containerized mission modules.
Meeting room, briefing room, flight office and ship’s office.

ACCOMMODATION
Fully heated and air-conditioned accommodation for 60 crew in single, double and four berth bedrooms, mess rooms, recreation area, galley, laundry, gymnasium and sickbay with treatment and recovery area for 4 pers.

NAUTICAL AND COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT
Radio equipment according to GMDSS rules for Area A3 incl. Satcom C and F77, UHF and HF receivers.
Nautical equipment incl. Integrated bridge system with X and S-band radars, ECDIS, Gyro, DGPS, Speedlog, Autopilot, Echo sounder, Navtex etc.

ARMAMENT AND SENSORS
Main gun up to 76 mm on fore ship
Secondary guns, 2x 20 mm
Medium range surv. radar
E/O fire control sensor
The vessel is fitted for required armament and sensors, and fitted with the necessary ammunition stores, data/electrical support systems

SAFETY, SURVIVABILITY
Survivability to either DDS 079, 2-compartment damage stabilty, or IMO stability req., + Special Purpose Ship-code damage stability if applicable.
Main engines and generator sets distributed over 2 separate engine rooms.
