PARIS: A French official says Egypt has agreed to buy 24 Rafale jets as part of a 5.2 billion-euro (US$5.93 billion) defense deal, marking the first foreign sale of the French-made fighters.

The official said French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian was expected to travel to Cairo on Monday to sign the accord. The official spoke only on condition that his name not be used, citing ministry protocol.

The sale, if confirmed, would mark the culmination of years of French efforts to sell the multi-role fighters built by Dassault Aviation. A company spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.

The official said a French FREMM frigate and missiles made by MBDAwere also part of the deal.

This shows that Egypt is improving with the times and will have better defenses and attack weapons and jets which will save the country if war breaks out and will be safe. The cost of the jets are quite high, so better be worth it and hopefully they use less fuel as if it consumes a lot than that will be a problem when flying it in the air. I hope the money is used well and the jet is used when it is needed and can be a asset to the country which is a good thing.

Well it's about time for Egypt to upgrade a bit. The situation in that part of the world isn't getting any better and Egypt is facing several security threats, both internal and external. The Rafale is a very potent aircraft and will surely improve Egypts defences.. if this rumour is true.
