Filipino troops had already planned for a worst-case-scenario in the South China Sea, particularly in the Spratlys. They are monitoring China's activities in the area particularly the reported deployment of surface-to-air missiles in the Paracel islands. That move of China is aggravating the tense situation in the region that may culminate into an armed conflict.

Seriously, why war? We are trying to end the ones going on while China and Philippines are thinking of starting another. What happened to peace talks? Not everything should end with war; it is the citizens that suffer and not the leaders.

I hope everyone check on the map where Paracel islands are. If not China who claims them, who can? Beside Vietnam. Actually China is closer to the area than Vietnam. All other countries are at least 1,000 miles in the South. So in reality, Vietnam is the only other claimant of Paracel islands (Taiwan's claim is for Republic of China, which is the root cause for PRC as well).

Vietnam's claim is also based on the claim of the French who used to control all of Indochina as a colony. Even the French recognized the sovereignty of Paracel islands belonged to Qing Empire of China in exchange of Qing's recognition of the French control of Indochina. The French went back on their words later.

Either way, the HQ-9 AA missiles placed on Paracel islands has a max range of 200km. Being over 1,000km away, Philippines should have nothing to worry about.

The island where China put missiles and jets on is called Woody island.

On the other hand, Philippines got nothing to fight off the Chinese if a war really break out. A single Chinese 052D destroyer can wipe out the entire Philippines' navy, and they have 3 of those in service, 3 more in sea trial, 6 more under construction. Saying Philippines is ready is a joke. Unless what Philippines meant was "ready to drag the US into the war".

Philippines should not even think about the router for war when it comes to disputes. It is a no win situation. Talk is the only opinion. The US will only act if China is weak like Iraq with no real WMD which China has hundreds.

Is the Philippines preparing to go into suicide mode? They should understand they will not be able to get much International support in this situation because world powers won't openly confront each others. There would probably be some covert support but nothing further.
I would advise the Philippines to not to try to play a "David" role in this case because China is the "Goliath" that they will not be able overcome.

Philippine will be turned into dust by China. I hope the Philippines don't fall into the U.S trap.

When Spain signed treaty to give up Philippines to the US as a colony, it never included any of the disputed islands from Spartly island chain. The US knows it well, and when the dispute between Taiwan (Republic of China) and Philippines first came up some decades ago (when Philippines unplugged the ROC flag on two islands in South China Sea and claimed them as theirs), the US backed the claim of ROC.

Seriously, why war? We are trying to end the ones going on while China and Philippines are thinking of starting another. What happened to peace talks? Not everything should end with war; it is the citizens that suffer and not the leaders.

Actually China tried so many times to have Philippines to talk about the disputes. Philippines refused to talk without dragging in another dozen countries including the US and Japan. Basically Philippines is playing the victim here, and the US mass media is gladly to back them up without reporting the whole story at all.

So true.
They will at most get some mouthing services from some foreign media and spokesmen. The US might sail a few ships and fly a few aircraft through the area in the name of "freedom of navigation". but when it comes to have real blows, it is highly unlikely for two nuclear powers to fight each other, especially when it is for a third party rather than its own benefits.

Philippines will never "be ready" for war with anyone. All it wants is to drag in others such as the US to do its bidding... war if necessary but they won't fight it out themselves.
