Better that nothing i'd say,now all European countries should do the same..

French President Francois Hollande said on Wednesday he would increase the country's defence budget by 3.8 billion euros over four years from 2016 to ensure the army had the capacity to deal with threats at home and handle overseas operations.

PARIS: French President Francois Hollande said on Wednesday he would increase the country's defence budget by 3.8 billion euros over four years from 2016 to ensure the army had the capacity to deal with threats at home and handle overseas operations.

"France is facing threats at home and overseas," Hollande told reporters. "Security, protection, independence are principles that are not negotiable."

He said the defence budget in 2015 would remain at 31.4 billion euros (US$34.51 billion), but that an extra 3.8 billion euros would be given to the army over the period between 2016-2019.

He did not say how the extra costs would be financed.

Is the French army going to expand its presence far from home? Any announced arms deals so far?

Well said.
So we may see France invade a country ? (:-) lol
Just kidding . ^_^

Honestly that's good move. World stability is going down .

We will invade Britain (as we always wished),by using our Mistrals that we didn't have during the precedent wars,so we will revenge.)
Its a good news, but not enough (The defence needs something like 4B€ more to fund the new equipments, and to maintain the personnels that were due to be cut (~25.000 were planned to be cut,but the president said that 18.500 would be saved,so instead of 25.000,only 6.500 will be cut,so not the combat troops, also it seems that the size of the ground forces will increase by 11.000 soldiers over 3 years, and the reserve by 12.000,so it's a good news) and to fund the ongoing operations.
And because more soldiers means more equipment etc.
And because the president ordered the army to deploy permanently 7.000 soldiers on the streets. I'm sure this is just the first batch of funds, the Military programming law will be updated in June (instead of December because of the exeptionnal situation),and we will then see. ;)
But 3.8 billions € from now isn't that bad,and better than nothing,we won't cry. :)
I hope all European countries will also take this way.

Is the French army going to expand its presence far from home? Any announced arms deals so far?

In fact, the army will not expend its presence outside, but inside,7.000 soldiers will be permanently deployed in the streets.
Actually as i said above, theMilitary Progamming Law will be updated in June, and there will be some news about equipments, also more soldiers, means more equipments.... Actually,we just heard that the army could order another batch of NH90 helicopters.

A sensible plan from the French. The UK budget has also been increased by almost 3 billion but this is solely for the defense of the Falkland Islands. No extra monies appear to have been allocated to the fight against terrorism whatsoever.
