Greek Fighter Jets lock onto Turkish F-16 in the Aegean

Greek fighter jets lock onto Turkish F-16 in the Aegean! - I got him! says the pilot (VIDEO) 2

Dramatic new footage has emerged that shows a Greek pilot flying a Mirage fighter jet and locking onto a Turkish F-16 fighter jet that was violating Greek airspace on Sunday, SKAI reported.

According to the report, the dogfight took place in the Central Aegean at about the same time that two other Turkish F-16’s were harassing a Greek military helicopter that was transporting the Minister of National Defence Nikos Panagiotopoulos and General Konstantinos Floros around the Eastern Aegean islands of Oinousses and Agathonisi.

In the video, you can hear the Greek pilot say to a second pilot that “I have him,” in reference to locking onto the Turkish F-16 jet he was chasing.

The footage shows the Turkish pilot who was violating Greek airspace making a desperate attempt to escape by erratically maneuvering. However, the Greek pilot of the Mirage puts the Turkish F-16 in shooting parameters and locks the opponent.

The video document uploaded to YouTube shows the following dialogue:

PILOT 1 : FOX 2 (VOLI AIM 2)

PILOT 2: I have him

PILOT 2: The other one is coming.

PILOT 2: I also recorded it on the tape

PILOT 1: Nice

PILOT 2: Stable in GUNS

PILOT 1: SAME

This has become a very usual and normal occurrence for Greek fighter pilots dealing with Turkish jets who violate Greek airspace on a daily basis. However, it is extremely rare for the Greek military to release such footage.

It is likely that the footage was released in response to the Turkish jets who harassed Panagiotopoulos and Floros, as reported by Greek City Times, and serves as a reminder why Greek pilots have won in consecutive years NATO’s “Best Warrior” awards.

Video Released by The Hellenic Air Force Shows Turkish F-16 “Engaged” by Greek Mirage 2000 Over Aegean Sea

HAF Mirage 2000 vs TuAF F-16.

The clip below was filmed by the HUD camera of one of the two Mirage 2000-5EG Mk2 jets belonging to the 331st Mira “Thiseas” during a close encounter with Turkish F-16C Block 40 jets over the Aegean Sea.

According to the Greek reports, the video was filmed on Sunday, May 3, as HAF Mirages were dispatched to intercept two Turkish F-16s which were allegedly harassing a Greek NH-90 helicopter carrying the Minister of National Defense Nikos Panagiotopoulos and his staff.

“I have him” says the Greek Mirage 2000 pilot who is chasing one of the Turkish F-16s.

Here’s a translation of what the pilots say in the video (courtesy of @e_amyna):

PILOT 1: FOX 2
PILOT 2: I have him
PILOT 2: The other one is coming (…)
PILOT 2: I have him on tape
PILOT 1: Nice
PILOT 2: Stable (or steady) at GUNS
PILOT 1: SAME

What you can see in the clip is the engagement (or at least the part of it we can see in the footage) starting at FL260, with Mirage pointing at the F-16 in a steep (almost vertical) climb or “pull” ended with a half aileron roll, moderate descend and subsequent displacement turn. The clip ends with the two aircraft around FL130 in a gentle (> 2g) left turn at less than 300 KIAS. The whole scene does appear to be just some kind of aggressive maneuvering rather than a real dogfight: the range of speed and the g-load show that the two aircraft are fighting but not as hard as one would expect in a real aerial engagement. In fact, due to the low energy involved in the engagement (or maybe because of a poor energy management) the defender is not able or does not maneuver as aggressively as you would expect in such a defensive condition.

“It looks more like a training engagement with a somehow cooperative target than a real dogfight” says our own Alessandro “Gonzo” Olivares, fighter pilot and IP.

The HUD symbology is in dogfight mode that should allow the pilot to use both the gun and the FOX 2 (IR-guided air-to-air missile): in fact, you can clearly see the CCIL (continuously computed impact line) of the gun as well as the stadiametric circle, while hearing at the tone of the IR seeker.

While interesting, the video is just the latest of a long series of HUD clips showing tense intercepts over the Aegean Sea: every now and then this kind of footage surfaces fuelling national pride and excitement on one or the other side.

Greece frequently claims the skies over the disputed islands of the Aegean Sea are allegedly violated by the Turkish Air Force jets.

Greece claims 10 miles of air space around a chain of Greek islands lined up along the Turkish west coast, part of those are in very close proximity to the mainland, while Turkey recognizes only six miles (that is to say the extent of the Greek territorial waters, recognized by each other).

Many of the incidents take place within the four-mile radius, which Athens considers its sovereign airspace and Ankara considers international one; however, according to several reports, there are a number of unauthorised Turkish military flights directly over Greek islands themselves.

An article published last year reported that according to the the Greek General Staff, the number of incidents of Turkish aircraft violating the country’s airspace over the Aegean in the first ten months of 2019 had reached 3,954.

A previous article, published by Politico in 2014 reported figures from research at the University of Thessaly, according to which there had been 2,244 incursions of Turkish fighter jets and helicopters in 2014. Although it’s unclear how many of those +2,000 occurred within the contentious 4NM airspace (nor do we know the figures of the Greek violations logged on average by the Turkish Air Force besides this data from 2012), it’s quite clear that a border incident is always around the corner over the Aegean Sea. Like the one that led to dogfight and subsequent a mid-air collision in 2006 (causing the death of a Greek pilot).

Greek Forces on Alert Following 'Provocations' from Turkey
By Anthee Carassava
May 05, 2020

FILE - Greek soldiers are seen on a military vehicle at the Kastanies border crossing with Turkey's Pazarkule, in Kastanies, Greece, March 12, 2020.
ATHENS - Greece has lodged a stiff demarche with Turkey claiming Turkish officials ordered fighter jets to buzz a military helicopter carrying Greece’s defense minister over the Aegean sea. Turkey denies the accusation, saying Greece — in the words of Turkish officials — is over dramatizing what Ankara says are routine flights in the region.

The government in Athens is concerned that  a fresh standoff in the Aegean could scare travelers who are starting to make vacation plans to the Greek islands once the coronavirus emergency ends.

Greek government spokesman Stelios Petsas said Greece was ready to resist any Turkish provocation.

He said harassment of the Greek defense minister’s plane by a group of Turkish warplanes over the Aegean Sea was indicative of what he called Turkey’s practice of breaching good neighbor relations and international rules.

Greece and Turkey have had a long history of testy relations, each challenging the other’s claims to air, sea and land rights in the Aegean Sea that divides them.

The two NATO allies have come to the brink of war three times in the last 30 years. Athens most recently accused Ankara of orchestrating an invasion, a term Greek officials use to describe Turkey’s decision to allow and encourage tens of thousands of migrants who had been trapped in Turkey to push their way into Greece and the heart of Europe.

Officials tell VOA Turkish warplanes came within 400 meters of the defense minister’s  military helicopter as he was travelling to inspect observation points on remote islands in the Aegean.

Officials say the jets were quickly intercepted by Greek warplanes. But then, the officials said another sortie of Turkish firefighters continued to do dangerous maneuvers over the Aegean. Since then, 20 more aerial confrontations have followed despite Greece’s protest to Turkey.

Officials in Ankara deny there has been any harassment. They say Turkish airplanes were merely conducting routine flights and accused Athens of exaggerating.

Refugees and migrants wait to be transfered from the island of Lesbos to the Greek mainland, May 3, 2020.

It is not the first time Greek and Turkish warplanes have faced off over the Aegean. But tensions between the two countries have soared dramatically since Turkey’s bid to push more than 150,000 migrants into Greece. And now, officials here fear a new standoff, either in the sea, land or air that separates the two age-old rivals.

In the last few days, authorities here captured video of the Turkish coast guard pushing migrant vessels to Greece, increasing refugee flows to a country already inundated with more than 100,000 asylum seekers.

Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos says it would be a false illusion or expectation for Greece to anticipate anything less from Turkey, especially after it has already made clear that will re-open its borders and allow migrants free access to Europe once it manages to contain the outbreak of the coronavirus in its country.

How long that will take remains unclear.

Greece has successfully managed its health crisis and is now easing restrictions nationwide. There is concern that any fresh standoff in the Aegean may spook travellers from making plans to visit Greece and its sun-kissed islands this summer.

Tourism is Greece’s biggest industry and the government here hopes to open the country up for business by July.

Greeks and Turks play hide and seek all the time. In this video it doesn't look like Turk was even worried about Mirage locking. Probably he was being escorted out of their territory.
