Saudi sources told Al Arabiya News that official records show that the name of the former Iranian ambassador to Beirut Ghazanfar Abadi does not appear among this year’s pilgrims.

If his presence during the pilgrimage is confirmed, that would mean that he has entered the country by “unknown manners,” possibly registering with a different name and description.

He is feared to have died in the stampede during hajj last week that killed hundreds. Ghazanfar Abadi, who worked as the country’s ambassador in Beirut until last year, has been declared missing and is believed to have been at the pilgrimage to Makkah, Iran’s state TV said.

An Iranian state TV broadcast on Saturday said that two state TV reporters and a prominent political analyst were also missing after the stampede, which killed at least 769, according to the latest figures from Saudi health minister Khalid al-Falih, and injured hundreds more.

Iran is about to do something. This is unusual. He might have gotten in with different name but his fingerprint is in the Saudi system. God knows what Iran is up to.

Iran criticizes Saudi Arabia over Hajj deaths - CNN.com

Three days after hundreds of people died in a stampede at the holiest Muslim pilgrimage, the Hajj, Iran's Supreme Leader lashed out at host nation Saudi Arabia.

"Saudi rulers, instead of shunning (responsibility), must accept their responsibility in this grave incident by apologizing to the Muslim Ummah and bereft families," said Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Sunday, according to Iranian state-run Press TV.

At least 769 people were killed in a stampede in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday, according to Saudi state-run SPA news agency. At least 934 people were injured.

Whereas many other nations have so far reacted to the tragedy with a more diplomatic and conciliatory tone, Iran, a bitter rival, has blasted Saudi Arabia.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani cut short his visit to the United Nations and is expected to return home Monday to participate in a ceremony marking the return of the bodies of those Iranian who lost their lives in the stampede, the state-run IRNA news agency reported.

"This is not a situation with which to play politics," Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said Saturday. "I would hope that the Iranian leaders would be more sensible and more thoughtful with regards to those who perished in this tragedy and wait until we see the results of the investigation."

Plying politics over such tragedy. Iranians have no shame.

Iran threatens Saudis over hajj catastrophe
Iran on Saturday vowed to take international legal action against Saudi Arabia’s rulers over the crush of Muslim pilgrims at this year’s hajj, which killed at least 769 people, including 136 Iranians, and has led to an escalation of tensions between the regional archrivals.

They don't want to admit it's their people who are responsible for the catastrophe. They'll do whatever it takes to convince themselves otherwise. Maybe some people might believe them. And the media is helping:

Mecca hajj stampede: Road closures for Saudi Arabia King Salman blamed for Eid-al-Adha catastrophe
the head of Iran's Hajj pilgrimage, Said Ohadi, said two paths had been sealed near the site where the stampede occurred for "unknown reasons" and claimed "this caused the tragic incident", according to AP.

Saudi Arabia Minister of Health Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al-Falih met with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Hashimi on Thursday to discuss the incident of the Hajj stampede.

During the meeting, both Ministers discussed bilateral relations, in addition to the current medical situation of Iranian pilgrims, mechanisms to transport those who passed away during the Mina stampede incident, and following up on the medical treatments of those injured and hospitalized.

Al-Falih conveyed the condolences of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud to the Iranian government and the families of the deceased, asserting Saudi Arabia’s willingness to cooperate with the Iranian government on all measures.

For his part, the Iranian minister hailed Saudi efforts, response in dealing with the incident and providing all medical and ambulance services to all the victims, expressing an understanding of the difficult task undertaken by the Saudi government and the services it accords during the Hajj season and the dedication in carrying them out.

The parties agreed to transport the bodies of the dead Iranians who were identified as soon as possible and continue to communicate to identify the rest and take care of the situation of the injured.

At the end of the meeting the Iranian Minister of Health Hassan Hashemi said the stampede was “something out of people's control.”

That's a terrible disaster particularly so that it was related to a religious event. From what I remember, there was a crane accident in Mecca (Makkah) that killed more than a hundred. And after some weeks, this stampede occurred killing more than 700 people. With the stampede, it is useless to blame but I guess it is the fault of the authorities to have instilled peace and order in a crowded place like that.
