Iran downs drone over southern port city of Mahshahr: IRNA

Iran has confirmed that its forces have shot down a drone and said it belonged to a foreign country, state news agency IRNA reported.

Iran's air defence force hit the "unknown" drone early on Friday morning at the port city of Mahshahr in the country's southwest, IRNA reported.

The report did not say whether the drone was a military or commercially available device.

"The downed drone definitely belonged to a foreign country. Its wreckage has been recovered and is being investigated," the governor of Iran's southern Khuzestan province, Gholamreza Shariati, said, as quoted by IRNA.

Shariati said the drone violated Iran's airspace.

Earlier, semiofficial Tasnim news agency reported that the unmanned aircraft was downed over Iranian territory with a domestically manufactured Mersad surface-to-air missile.

If this is one of those little amazon drones then everything goes on. If it is a foreign drone then it will be interesting depending on which country it came from. So far they haven't shown any evidence of the drone or implicated a specific country.

Of course Iran rushes to blame an Arab neighbor, Bahrain, because of sectarian and nationalistic motives. They first need to show us the drone. And then try to prove to us that it came from Bahrain. If it really was an Israeli drone, it likely flew in from Iraq or the sea. But that won't stop Iran from trying to pin blame on Arab nations it hopes to seize influence over.

And of course they won't retaliate against Israel.

If they don't release any visual evidence, then this could just be staged by Iran itself. To blame Bahrain and launch an attack on Bahrain. Israel has not commented on such reports, and they may have no involvement but they don't comment anyways to project to Arab states that they are in an active secret war with Iran. Which is not true. They are waiting for steps the US will take and they are no leader in the region. There is a saying that the most powerful country in the ME is the US, and that still holds true.

Former Iranian diplomat to Mayadeen reports preliminary indications are that the drone (shot down by Iranian air defences earlier) was an Israeli drone that took off from Bahrain.
