Iran to unveil new homegrown air defense system

TEHRAN, Aug. 25 (MNA) – A senior Iranian military commander said the country is set to unveil a new domestically-produced air defense system in the near future.

Brigadier General Alireza Elhami, the deputy commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base said on Sunday that the homegrown system, dubbed ‘Oghab’ (meaning eagle in Persian), is passing the final tests and will join the military forces soon.

Oghab is a short-range, mobile defensive system, capable of targeting different flying objects and cruise missiles, he added.

The top commander said the new system will confuse the enemies because it has been fully designed and developed by the Iranian experts and the enemies are not aware of what they will face.

In terms of SAM systems, 15th Khordad and Bavar 373.

15th Khordad was evolution of 3rd Khordad system with Sayyad-2/3 missiles and new engagement radar etc (3rd Khordad SAM is what shot down RQ-4 from 80-90km away).

Bavar 373 was the culmination of an 11 year project to create an indigenous LR SAM system. It was ready for a few years, but they just decided to show it now after it conducted a successful BM interception. But they did not show all of it; they said they have more aspects of it to show in the future (e.g. footage of BM interceptions and ABM capabilities). They already announced they are working on upgrades to Bavar 373 to bring it in line with s-400 and there is speculation about a larger and longer-range Sayyad 5 SAM missile (Sayyad 4 currently has 200km range). So I suspect will hear more news about Bavar's ABM capabilities in the next 6 months and some news about its next evolution in the next few years.

This new SR SAM is the "Oghab" and not completed yet (in final tests, probably officially unveiled within 12-24 months). Iran started work on creating an indigenous system analogous to the Pantsir SAM system (which Iran does not possess) in 2016. But this is the first time they revealed its name and status. Also rumours that it combines cold launch technology of the Tor (which Iran does possess) with the Pantsir-style missile.

Top Israeli officials alarmed by possible U.S.-Iran talks

The Israeli government is deeply concerned about the possibility of new U.S.-Iran nuclear talks, which President Trump discussed today alongside President Emmanuel Macron of France, 3 Israeli Cabinet ministers and 2 senior Israeli officials involved in Iran policy tell me.

The Israeli government is concerned that a summit between Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani could happen very soon. They fear the ensuing process will be similar to U.S.-North Korea talks, thus taking pressure off the Iranian regime.

"We have no interest in talks between the U.S. and Iran, but our ability to influence Trump or confront him on this issue is pretty limited."
— Israeli Cabinet minister
"We were very lucky that until now the Iranians rejected all of Trump's proposals for talks."
— Senior Israeli official involved in Iran policy
  • Trump confirmed that he'd be willing to meet Rouhani, who said hours earlier that he'd be ready to meet Trump if such a meeting would solve the problems of the Iranian people.
What to watch: One possible venue could be next month's UN General Assembly meeting in New York. Trump, Rouhani and Macron are all expected to attend. Netanyahu, meanwhile, might not be at the annual meeting because it falls 10 days after Israel's elections.

Interesting developments in Iraq. Iraq agreed not to buy S-400 under US pressure, but now with Israeli strikes in Iraq it is almost certain that Iraq will move to purchase S-400 or some SAM systems from Iran (maybe 3rd Khordad/15th Khordad or Talash 2/3).
