In the mid-80s Israel and India had secretly planned to destroy Pakistan’s nuclear facility in Kahuta on the outskirts of Islamabad. Israel, which does not share border with Pakistan, was thought to be a part of the plan because it did not want to see an “Islamic bomb.” The plan was aborted after Pakistan warned that it would target India’s nuclear facilities if Kahuta came under attack. Neither Israel nor India have ever officially acknowledged it, although, there were several private accounts and references in some books, showing the existence of such a plan. Whether or not Israel was indeed contemplating destroying Pakistan’s nuclear facility, it nevertheless reinforced the perception in the country that Israel is Pakistan’s enemy. Public opinion suggests that there exists an Indo-US-Israeli nexus against Pakistan. Most recently Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani also alluded to the emerging alliance between these three countries, insisting this is not only a threat for the South Asian region but also the wider Muslim world.

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was on tour to India recently, brushed aside this perception that his country views Pakistan as an enemy state. Netanyahu also claimed that the main focus of his visit to India was economic rather than a military one. He also refused to take the bait when he was asked during an interview with an Indian news channel whether Israel would back New Delhi if it launches “surgical strikes” against Pakistan. The statement was significant for two counts (a) because he said this on the Indian soil (b) it came against the backdrop of Pakistan’s concerns that growing Indo-Israel defence cooperation can disturb the conventional balance in the already volatile region.

Israel may not have any diplomatic ties with Pakistan, but this does not mean it would say something publicly that antagonises Islamabad. Netanyahu’s calculated statement on Pakistan was manifestation of that approach. Not long ago, Israel had to issue a clarification after a fake news story claimed that its former defence minister threatened to launch a nuclear attack against Pakistan if it sent its troops to Syria. No matter how we perceive Israel, the fact is it is very smart and has a robust foreign policy. After all, diplomacy is the art of making new friends and avoiding confrontation with countries with which you don’t have the best of relations.

Should Pakistan revisit its decades-old policy towards Israel then? The subject is sensitive and that is why there is little or no public debate on it, although policymakers must have been pondering this question behind closed doors. Pakistan’s Israel policy historically has been driven by the position taken by the larger Muslim world against the Jewish state. But as a matter of fact proponents of that policy have now themselves embraced the change. Saudi Arabia is the prime example. It is an open secret that Saudi Arabia and Israel have been talking to each other for many years now to at least maintain some contacts if not establishing full diplomatic relations.

Pakistan does not necessarily need to compromise on its principled stance on the Palestinian issue or recognize Israel. But Islamabad can at least explore the possibility of maintaining working relationship with Israel to protect its strategic interests. Former military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf took the unprecedented step to reach out to Israel. In 2005, the foreign ministers from Pakistan and Israel held landmark talks in Istanbul. The process, however, could not move further because of the political turmoil in Pakistan and subsequent ouster of Musharraf from power. The very idea of maintaining contacts was to offset any negative fallout of Israeli’s growing intimacy with India. That approach is still very much relevant. Also opening channels of communication with Israel can give a whole new perspective to Pakistan-US ties given the influence of the Jewish lobby in Washington, DC.

Israel and Pakistan not enemies but they are also not friends.

Israel conspires with India to attack Pakistani nuclear facilities which foiled, indeed originally a plan by Israel without India but they don't have access to any other country to refuel their jets so they have to involve India but later India refuses to allow Israel to carry out such attack fearing retaliation from Pakistan. During Kargill war Israel sent their air force pilots and engineers to modify IAF jets to carry out strikes at high altitude areas.

Israel is a smart state that I agree fully. But the thing is we are not that smart to match their smartness. The conflict is ideological when it comes to populace in both states. However, if bibi is interested he can learn a thing or two from Pakistani counterparts.

This guy is a pure sectarian sh*t ....... because of him and some others Pakistan lost a recent golden opportunity of global reach, a far better position that would have helped in dealing with Israel.

Unfortunately, Pakistan is run by a minority sect, while the majority are oblivious, or too naive to understand whats going on.

We shouldn't forget that we also sent our pilots to fight them before they came for our nukes.

After that PAF bought F16 parts from them, during the Pressler years. Pakistan did want good relations with them, but that did not go so well.

Secret agencies do cooperate with each other and pls don't ask how I know....

During Swat valley operations we pressurize CIA/US and they allow MOSSAD to release some info and we succeeded to end terrorism there.

These pilots volunteered and was sent on official leaves with notes their action must be considered as their own.

Same is with China and Pakistan... but we've brotherly relations with them.
Chinese don't share beliefs and Messengers with us. My friendly relations with China are purely interest based, no need to be that affectionate, we don't look like brothers at all.

For example?
Bibi is new to corruption ........ and we have some masters and phds in this field. Sometimes I think if our politicians did nothing and opened a consultancy departing training on how to fool your people and be filthy rich all the while you maintain profile of highly deprived and mistreated individual ....... they will make big bucks and create a soft image of Pakistan amongst all the corrupt and plunderers of the world.

Unfortunately, Pakistan is run by a minority sect, while the majority are oblivious, or too naive to understand whats going on.
I have advocated many times the approach of financing, supporting and relying solely on wealthy corrupts of Pakistan needs to stop ..... always looking to higher ups and ignoring common Pakistanis, who in turn get manipulated by these higher ups should be considered, and people to people contact needs to improve, the media needs to be bought and used ........ but Sheikhs don't care, they don't wish to learn.

.....just as the NLI volunteered and dressed up in civvies when they occupied positions in Kargil. And everybody is fooled.
It is India accusation, first Mujahideen capture the hills but when your air force disparately bombing our positions we have to engage Indian troops and at that NLI crossed into India occupied territory.

@I.R.A your posts are a bit confusing so you're in favor of establishing diplomatic relations with Israel or not? _-+-_

How easy is taking that decision (now)?

Generations of Pakistan have have grown up looking at Israel as an occupying oppressor, killer and murderer of Muslim children. You are fighting with the worst kind of terrorists, can you afford .... giving them another reason to fool your people? Plus you have significant Shiite population who love and hold Iran as some holy land .......

People of Israel don't like Muslims (its not some rocket science to understand that) ...... they believe in some serious sh*t that tells them that they will rule the people again, even if it means killing and removing non chosen ones at large scale ...... they have a purpose and ideology behind their separate land ........... and that ideology clashes with Islam and Muslims. Israel isn't in love with India because they two were some centuries old friends (just read what Judaism thinks of Idol worshipers) ....... it means something ..... somewhere their interests are common.
