There has been an event of mass killings at a nightclub in Orlando. It's estimated that 50 persons have been killed and 53 others injured. It has been reported that the act was probably carried by a pro-ISIS perpetrator. This world-wide influence of IFIS is a very worrying situation and here lies the difficulty in containing this organization's activities. There is the possibility that an ISIS influenced attack could crop up anywhere at anytime. Is there something that can be done to really put a halt to many of these activities?

Not really. I think you cannot fight this problem effectively because you just don't know where to hit. Not every Muslim is a terrorist and ISIS doesn't have a headquarters or some specific leader. It is not an organization of a single country and certainly it is not an official one. It is Islamic State of Iraq and Syria but not all people there share the same values. It is not universal at any point and dealing with ISIS over Iraq and Syria would be just another Afghanistan or any middle east conflict in the past. It is a really hard war to fight.

The best way to defeat ISIS would to have mean and proficient counterintelligence against their operatives the way the Saudis have done. This should be backed up with a credible initiative to win the hearts and minds of Muslim communities to reduce the likelihood of them giving sanctuaries to terrorist elements. But ISIS is too versatile to envisage any real victories soon. They are in it for the long haul. They would simply melt to where they started and then establish sleeper cells to begin a new phase of covert and overt operations.
