The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria’s branch in Egypt has claimed a wave of attacks on military checkpoints in the Sinai Peninsula that killed at least 15 soldiers on Wednesday.

“In a blessed raid enabled by God, the lions of the caliphate have simultaneously attacked more than 15 checkpoints belonging to the apostate army,” the group said in a statement posted on social media websites.

Reuters has reported that at least 30 people were killed in the attacks, including military personnel, with Doctor Osama el-Sayed at El-Arish General Hospital saying the hospital had received 30 bodies, “some of whom were wearing army fatigues.

According to an army spokesman who spoke to Reuters, 22 “terrorists” were killed in the attack.

Clashes between militants and soldiers have been going on in the region for hours, security sources told the Associated Press.

The attacks come just two days after the assassination in Cairo of the country's prosecutor-general Hesham Barakat. President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi vowed on Tuesday to step up a two-year crackdown on militants.

Officials told AP that Wednesday's attack took place just south of the town of Sheikh Zuweid and targeted at least six military checkpoints.

They said the militants also took soldiers captive and seized several armored vehicles. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Militants in northern Sinai have battled security forces for years but stepped up their attacks following the July 2013 ouster of Islamist President Mohammad Mursi.

Egyptian security forces stormed an apartment in the western Cairo suburb of '6th of October' and killed nine men whom they said were armed, security sources said.

The sources said authorities had received information the group was planning to carry out an attack. Among those dead was Nasser al-Hafi, a prominent lawyer for the Muslim Brotherhood and a former lawmaker.

That's quite scary even because Egypt is a quite popular tourist attraction.

I can't get it, Egyptian army is one of the strongest, biggest, well-equipped globally, and yet they couldn't finish off this terror group in a small peninsula like Sinai. Just invade the freaking Sinai with hundreds of thousands of troops, kill all terrorists, detain suspects, seize arms, destroy their havens, and establish checkpoints everywhere.

I am not aware that apart from holding on to some territories in Iraq and Syria, those extremists are now in Egypt? As I have been saying since early this year, that small victories of ISIS is getting to be real scary. It looks to me that they are advancing slow but steady. What happens at the end of the year? How many countries would they have invaded?

Egypt kills more than 100 militants in North Sinai

Egypt's armed forces said that at least 100 militants and 17 soldiers had been killed in a wave of attacks on military checkpoints in the Sinai Peninsula on Wednesday claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria’s branch in Egypt.

The statement, which was aired on state television, said 17 soldiers, including four officers, were killed. Thirteen soldiers were also wounded.

The attack is considered one of the biggest militant strikes in Egypt's modern history.

Earlier on Wednesday, Egyptian army F-16 jets and Apache helicopters struck ISIS positions in the town of Sheikh Zuweid that lies within the Sinai Peninsula, a strategic area located between Israel, the Gaza Strip and the Suez Canal.

Militants have reportedly taken up positions on rooftops and mined streets leading to the town’s police station to prevent forces from leaving, according to Al Arabiya News Channel and Agence France-Presse.

The army said five checkpoints were attacked by about 70 militants and that soldiers had destroyed three landcruisers fitted with anti-aircraft guns.

Clashes between militants and soldiers have been going for more than eight hours, marking the biggest onslaught yet.

ISIS’ Egyptian affiliate, Sinai Province, claimed responsibility for the Sinai attacks in a Twitter statement.

“In a blessed raid enabled by God, the lions of the caliphate have simultaneously attacked more than 15 checkpoints belonging to the apostate army,” the group said in a statement posted on social media websites.

ISIS had urged its followers to escalate attacks during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan which started in mid-June, though it did not specify Egypt as a target.

Security sources speaking to Reuters said the militants had planned to lay siege to Sheikh Zuweid town, where most of the fighting has been concentrated, by hitting all army checkpoints simultaneously.

Witnesses and security sources also reported hearing two explosions in the nearby town of Rafah, which borders Gaza. The sources said all roads leading to Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid were shut down and residents were staying in their homes.

In late April, the army extended by three months a state of emergency imposed in parts of Sinai.

The army has taken several measures to crush the insurgency. Aside from bombardments in the region, they have destroyed tunnels into the Palestinian-ruled Gaza Strip and created a security buffer zone in northern Sinai.

The army was also digging a trench along the border with Gaza in an effort to prevent smuggling.

The measures have stoked resentment among some residents, who say they rely on the smuggling trade through the tunnels and complain of neglect by the state.

The attacks come just two days after the assassination in Cairo of the country's prosecutor-general Hesham Barakat.

Militant attackes in northern Sinai have been stepped up following the July 2013 ouster of Islamist President Mohammad Mursi.

In Cairo, security forces stormed an apartment in a western suburb and killed nine men whom they said were armed, security sources said.

Egypt adopts new anti-terror law

Wednesday, 1 July 2015

Egypt’s cabinet approved draft anti-terrorism and election laws on Wednesday, the transitional justice minister said.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had promised a tougher legal system on Tuesday, after a car-bomb attack that killed the top public prosecutor, the highest-level state official to be killed in years.

The cabinet said in a statement that the anti-terrorism legislation would provide “quick and just deterrence” against terrorism. It said there were also measures that would dry up the avenues of terrorism funding.

The statement said it had approved a “package of draft laws that achieve swift justice and retribution for our martyrs,” without providing further details.

The moves came on a day in which Egypt witnessed one of its worst militant attacks in years. Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants in North Sinai attacked several military checkpoints, and at least 70 people were killed.

The insurgency, which has killed hundreds of soldiers and police, has intensified since then-army chief Sisi ousted the Islamist president Mohamed Mursi after mass protests against his rule in 2013.

Sisi has since overseen a crackdown on Islamists. Thousands of alleged Islamist supporters have been jailed and scores have been sentenced to death, some in mass trials. Mursi and other senior Muslim Brotherhood figures have been sentenced to death.

The government considers the Brotherhood a terrorist group and does not distinguish between it and other militants. The Brotherhood, which says it rejected the killing of the public prosecutor, Hisham Barakat, says it is committed to peaceful activism.

In February, Sisi signed off on an anti-terrorism law that gives authorities more sweeping powers to ban groups on charges ranging from harming national unity to disrupting public order.

The “Terrorist Entities” law enables authorities to act against any individual or group deemed a threat to national security, including people who disrupt public transportation, an apparent reference to protests.

The cabinet also approved a slew of election-related laws, opening the way to setting a date for a long-delayed parliamentary election.

Egypt’s parliamentary poll was due in March, but was delayed after the Constitutional Court ruled part of an election law unconstitutional.

The election is the final step in a political roadmap that the army had announced in July 2013.

The draft election laws includes legislation on electoral districts. The new law allocated 448 seats to individuals and 120 seats to lists. The previous law had allocated 420 seats to individuals and 120 through winner-takes-all lists with quotas for women, Christians and youth.

The laws have to be approved by the president.

An iron fest against the terrorists should be the way in finishing off ISIS existence in Sinai. Large amount of troops must be deployed.

Egypt's not allowed to have large deployment due to camp David agreement. Sisi himself doesn't want to get the job done because he wants to rally Egyptians around him under security pretext. When these attacks happen he presents himself as someone who's protecting the country from foreign conspiracies and working to secure it. Because he has nothing to offer economically and in terms of reform, he prefers these sporadic attacks in order to maintain his support base.

However with the murder of 13 MB officials today in Cairo he has sparked a civil war and MB must arm now and rid the Arab world of oppressors and foreign agents. The people of the region can no longer tolerate oppression and subjguatjon just because local and foreign governments fear Islam ruling the region as Islam is the most just.

Anti thermal camouflage would have prevented such thing from happening and make the Apache go blind. Nice work nonetheless.

Egypt killed 241 Sinai militants from July 1-5, army says

AFP, Cairo
Monday, 6 July 2015

Egypt's military killed 241 militants in the Sinai from July 1-5, the army said Monday, including militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) who launched spectacular attacks last week.

The military has poured troops and armour into the peninsula where security forces have been fighting an Islamist insurgency since then army chief and now President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ousted president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

On July 1, militants from ISIS launched blistering attacks in the North Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid - the scene of regular militant attacks - in which dozens were killed.

The military said 21 soldiers were killed in those attacks, after several media outlets reported higher tolls from security officials.

In figures released on Monday by the army spokesman on his Facebook page, the military said its forces killed 241 militants between July 1 and 5.

Four wanted militants and 29 suspected militants were also arrested.

Sixteen crude bombs were detonated, while 26 cars and 28 motorbikes belonging to militants were destroyed over the same period, the army said.

On Facebook, the army also posted photographs of dead militants, some even displayed on military tanks.

On Saturday, Sisi made a surprise visit to North Sinai, where in an address to troops at a camp whose location was not disclosed he said the region was now "totally stable".

The jihadists say their attacks are in response to the bloody repression launched by the authorities after Morsi's ouster, which has seen at least 1,400 people killed and thousands more jailed.

Most of the attacks on the security forces are claimed by a group calling itself "Sinai Province".

Formerly known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, it changed its name when it pledged allegiance to ISIS last November.
