ISIS 'destroys Syria airbase' used by Russia
2 hours ago

A strategically significant Syrian airbase, used by Russia, appears to have been almost completely destroyed - according to new satellite imagery exclusively seen by the BBC.

The Tiyas facility - near the recently re-captured city of Palmyra in Syria - was repeatedly hit - with the so-called Islamic State presumed to be behind the attack.

Four Russia combat helicopters and around 20 supply trucks were destroyed in the bombardment. It is not clear if any people died.

US geopolitical intelligence company Stratfor gave the images to BBC.

Stratfor analyst Sim Tack explained what they revealed.

Syria will be better off without the US and Russia. These two countries are reason the world is in such a mess.

Syria has turned out to be a potential flashpoint for all sorts of players. It seems that sooner or later, Russia will come to reckon with the consequences of its intervention. The mistake being made is that they have failed to realise that ISIS is a very versatile organization and will only hold territory when is suits them and then change tack. Only a long haul approach has any chance against ISIS as opposed to quick fixes which would inevitably end in a quagmire.

Agreed. Both countries should never gone there in the first place, decades ago. There is a lot of self interest in the area, so someone was going to make a mad dash for it eventually. Since the beginning of time native cultures and civilizations have disappeared from the planet because of invading forces, or colonization some would politely call it. Back in the day it was all about gold, now it's black gold.
