Israel, Russia create deconfliction mechanism
Yaakov Lappin, Tel Aviv - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
15 October 2015
Israel and Russia have succeeded in creating a mechanism to ensure that their air forces and navies avoid unintended clashes over and around Syria, IHS Jane's has been told.
This mechanism is currently active and involves what was described as joint understandings of each other's aerial and naval activity and is based on, among other things, mapping the activities of the two militaries.
It does not involve military co-operation, or even co-ordination, and exists solely to ensure that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and Russian Armed Forces do not inadvertently fire on one another or disrupt each other's missions. It also enables real-time communications between the two militaries for deconfliction purposes.
