The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) has received a consignment of M109 155 mm/37 calibre self-propelled howitzers to augment its artillery capabilities as part of a substantial build-up of its artillery capabilities.

The LAF "received about a dozen M109s supplied by Jordan via a third party transfer," the United States embassy in Beirut told IHS Jane's .

The howitzers were delivered in late January and the LAF will reportedly receive another 22.

Jordan took delivery of 118 M109A2/A3 guns and three driving school versions from the Netherlands in 2011-2012 and a consignment of M109A1s from the United States in the 1980s.

The M109 acquisition comes as the LAF is in near daily contact with Sunni militant groups in the rugged mountains of northeast Lebanon.

The LAF has deployed several batteries of M198 155 mm towed howitzers in the north of the Bekaa Valley to shell militant positions.

It is scheduled to receive 24 CAESAR 155 mm self-propelled howitzers as part of a USD3 billion Saudi-funded deal to purchase French weapons systems, according to a diplomatic source familiar with the arrangement.

The LAF said in a statement released on 5 February that it will also receive 72 additional M198 howitzers from the United States on 8 February. The US transferred 101 M198s to Lebanon in the 2009-11 period.

Jordan and Lebanon are arming themselves heavily these days. It looks like Lebanon deployed the howitzers on the border along Syria. Hopefully LAF maintain control over them.
