MD Helicopters has confirmed that it has won a programme to supply its MD 530G light scout attack helicopter to the Malaysian Army Air Corps.

The US-based company said in a statement on 1 February that the deal features six MD 530G helicopters that will be fitted with a "custom weapons package", advanced communications, and electro-optic/infrared (EO/IR) capability to identify and engage a wide range of threats.

The value of the contract, which will make Malaysia the launch customer of the MD 530G, has not been revealed. MD Helicopters said deliveries of the helicopters would take place from the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2016 until the end of the first quarter of 2017.

The programme will be supported through an industry co-operation arrangement to comply with Malaysia's defence offset regulations, through which Kuala Lumpur calls on equipment manufacturers to return 100% of the value of the main contract to local industry.

To meet this objective MD Helicopters said it would work with local industry in "all phases of the programme" including defining requirements and the implementation of a contractor logistic support package that covers initial entry, transition, pilot training, maintenance, repair and spare parts delivery.

The Malaysian Army Air Corps is expected to operate the MD 530G helicopters in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZONE), which was established in response to an incursion in February 2013 by Sulu militants. To enhance capability in this region, the Malaysian Army Air Corps has also increased the firepower of its AgustaWestland AW109 fleet and has secured the transfer of four UH-60A Black Hawk helicopters previously operated by the Royal Brunei Air Force.

The MD 530G was unveiled in March 2015 at the LIMA 2015 exhibition in Langkawi, Malaysia. Fitted with a Rolls-Royce M250-C47E3 turboshaft engine, the helicopter can be armed with weapons such as the Dillon Aero 134H-D mini-gun, the Talon 70 mm laser-guided rockets, and the FN Herstal HMP400 12.7 mm gun pods.
