Mauritania receives CN235 transport
24 May 2019

Mauritania’s military has taken delivery of a second hand CN235 transport aircraft from the United Arab Emirates.

The aircraft was delivered on 13 May in a ceremony at Nouakchott International Airport attended by Air Force and military generals. It will be used for surveillance, paratrooping, medical evacuation, search and rescue and transport duties.

The Mauritanian military said the aircraft was delivered as part of cooperation with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with an Emirati military delegation led by the UAE Air Force visiting Mauritania.

According to Jane’s Defence Weekly, the CN235M-110 that was delivered was acquired by the UAE from Indonesia in the 1990s. In November 2017 Airbus said that the UAE had ordered five C295s to replace its CN235s. It acquired seven CN235s built by IPTN (Indonesian Aerospace), with six surviving.

Mauritania’s Air Force only has a few transport aircraft in service, including two Cessna 208 Caravans, donated by the United States in 2014, a single BT-67, a single PC-6 Turbo Porter, a Y-12 and a C-212MP (used for maritime patrol). The Air Force is also believed to operate BN-2 Defenders.
