Mercedes Benz is developing a new light armoured vehicle and the prototype has been spied going under cold weather testing, reported www.auto-motor-und-sport.de.

The G Class light armoured vehicle is expected to be based on G500 4×4.

Mercedes already has the G Wagon LAPV 6.1 armored version and this new model will be more extreme compared to the current version. The prototype spied has rugged bumper and body but armoured panels are missing but it will be added in production version.

Mercedes has given side steps along with massive off-roading tires for excellent grip and stability. The suspension is expected to be tuned for off-roading. Some of the features in G Class light amoured vehicle is portal axles and STANAG level 2 protection. The interior will be basic and has the capacity to seat four people.

Mercedes G Class Light Armoured is powered by 3.0 L V6 diesel engine producing 181 BHP of power and 400 NM of torque. This engine is mated to 5 speed manual and automatic transmission. The power is transmitted to all four wheels and the armoured SUV can hit a top speed of 140 kmph.

Does this mean that Mercedes Benz will be venturing in military vehicles? If this armored vehicle becomes a success, would Mercedes be coming out with a tank next time? Gee, this sounds peculiar to me because my first job was as apprentice in the accessories shop of Universal Motors, the local distributor of Mercedes Benz cars in the Philippines. It's really interesting to see this thread.

I presume the SUV is going to be quite expensive. Question though is does the average Joe really need an armored vehicle? It's not like they'll have enemies who want to shoot them on the streets.

They already do make military vehicles. No tanks yet though.

Mercedes Benz Military Vehicles - All wheel drive vehicles, armoured patrol vehicles, armoured transport - Defence Industry Reports
In June 2010 Mercedes-Benz launched four new, heavily armoured models - all of the vehicles are geared toward modern wars, and the need for nimble all-terrain vehicles rather than tanks

Actros 4151 AK The Actros 4151 AK, is an eight-wheeled, all-wheel drive "protection class" transport that offers high grade armor against artillery and land mines. This vehicle offers STANAG 4569 level 4 protection against ballistics, which means enough armor to stop a 155mm explosive shell at 30 meters; and SATNAG 4569 level 4b protection against land mines.

FGA 14.5 ChassisThe FGA 14.5 chassis, is the latest and most high-performance platform for protected command and special-purpose vehicles. The FGA 14.5 special chassis from Mercedes-Benz provides manufacturers of military and civilian vehicles with a reconfigured platform based on that of the proven Unimog concept.

LAPV 6.XThe third new innovation — the LAPV 6.X concept vehicle — will augment the very mobile LAPV 5.4 light armoured patrol vehicles from the G-Class. The LAPV 6.X concept vehicle will improve on the LAPV 5.4 modular in the areas of protection (Level 3), off road capability, and, above all, agility. In doing so, it will make maximum use of the G-Class modular system.

The fourth world-class innovation is the 7.X concept vehicle, which combines the properties of two different Mercedes-Benz model series. As is the case with the two lighter LAPVs, the vehicle’s engine/transmission and cockpit are taken from the G-Class, while the frame and the axles are from the Unimog range. Because the larger vehicle, the LAPV 7.X, uses components from the Unimog modular system, it opens up an entirely new dimension of all-terrain capability for a patrol vehicle.

Mercedes Benz is one of the most durable cars in terms of body. My father said (before I got employed by Universal Motors) that Mercedez Benz cars have one of the best suspension that complements the strong metal for the body. Short of being bullet-proof, Mercedes Benz cars are usually owned by rich people with drivers. They said they feel safe in that car in case of a collision.

In general, the German cars are perfect. They consider everything, safety, performance, design, durability...even the small details. You go on 240 km/h and feel like you're driving below 100 km/h. ~^~

But I doubt they'll success in military. Their prices aren't easy to handle.

You are right, German cars are perfect in those days. And I remember the Mercedes Benz is the symbol of wealth here while the Volkswagen is the so called people's car of yore which doesn't need water in the radiator for it is air cooled. Unfortunately, there is a pollution issue with Volkswagen lately and that may cause the imminent collapse of that carmaker due to the incessant recall that is required by the US government.

It will be interesting to see these vehicles on the road and also the cost maybe high which will mean not everyone will be able to afford it hope there is a time where consumers can go for a test drive in the vehicle which will be good and see how it is to drive it on the road which will be a amazing experience for anyone who likes these sort of vehicles. I think the vehicle looks good and also hope that people learn more about the vehicle before buying this armoured vehicle and reckon it will be used in the military ,as the average person may not afford the full price which can be high and taking a loan will not be worth it as a loan will take too long to pay off. I think that the government will buy this and use it for personal use or in the military which can be a good thing and hope that we see good results from this and the vehicle is armoured and it wil be hard to penetrate it and also the bullets will not harm it.
