Sometime last year Israeli and Kenyan security officials met in Nairobi to discuss increased co-operation between the K.D.F and the I.DF. It has now emerged that part of the negotiation was for the sale of the six million dollar Israeli Merkava main battle tank. The Kenyan Army has for decades been dependent on the British Vickers 3 and recently Ukrainian T- 72s. These tanks were enough for the threat environment then. However the rise of heavily armed religious fundamentalists in the region have forced the powers that be to read the writing on the wall. The new Merk IVs are rumored to be custom built to optimize them for the Horn of Africa terrain.
