Russia will supply Pantsir-S1 air defense systems, Orlan-10E unmanned aerial vehicles and radars to Myanmar (formerly called Burma). The agreement was signed at a ceremony attended by Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, who is in Myanmar on an official visit, and the Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar’s armed forces, Min Aung Hlaing.
The Pantsir-S1 (NATO code name: SA-22 Greyhound) is an air defense missile-gun system designed to protect vital small-size and big military areas, industrial targets and land forces units and reinforced the air defense units responsible for the protection of troops and military installations against precision-guided air attack from low and extremely low altitudes. The mobile version of the Pantsir-S1 system includes a combat vehicle (up to six vehicles in a battery), surface-to-air guided missiles, 30mm rounds, and a transporter-loader vehicle (one per two combat vehicles).
Defense cooperation between Myanmar and Russia is not new : Russia already supplied to Myanmar 30 MiG-29 fighters, 12 Yak-130 training jets, 10 Mi-24 and Mi-35P helicopters, 8 Pechora-2M air defense missile systems, and also radars, armored vehicles and artillery pieces. A contract has been concluded for providing 6 Su-30SME fighters, of which some have already been delivered.
Furthermore, military hardware undergoes repairs and maintenance at Myanmar’s joint special center for all types of equipment supplied by Russia, both aircraft and armored vehicles.
Myanmar delegations regularly participate in the international Army Games and combat training activities. In 2020, a Myanmar contingent took part in the Kavkaz-2020 exercise. Also, in 2018 an inter-governmental agreement was concluded on simpler procedures for Russian naval ships visiting Myanmar’s ports.
