Netanyahu says Iran seeking means to attack Israel from Yemen

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Iran on Monday of seeking the means to launch precision-guided missiles at Israel from Yemen, a signal that the war-torn Gulf Arab country could come under pre-emptive Israeli attack.

Netanyahu made his allegations, which were short on details, as he hosted a senior U.S. delegation and following days of unusually voluble warnings in Israel that war could break out with Iran or its allies on more than one front.

Neither Iran nor the Yemeni Houthi fighters it sponsors had an immediate response to Israel’s allegation. The Houthis use missiles and drones in their war against a coalition led by neighboring Saudi Arabia but there is scant public indication they possess weapons capable of traveling the some 2,000 km (1,240 miles) to Israel.

“Iran wants to develop precision-guided missiles that can hit any target in Israel within five to ten meters,” Netanyahu said in a speech in Jerusalem.

“Iran hopes to use Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen as bases to attack Israel with statistical missiles and precision-guided missiles. That is a great, great danger,” he said.

Iran would not gain anything by attacking from Yemen, just a political statement from Netanyahu. Better to stick with rockets fired by hisbullah.

Knowing Iran, it'll probably get lost and take out a few more muslim countries first before finding Israel.

Not Israel, Iranian target is Saudi Arabia.
Iranian proxies in Saudia and Bahrain failed. So, coming from Yemen is a good option.

In Pakistan and Iraq, Iranian proxies are pretty strong, and Syria is already an Iranian province.
Israel factor is just a decoy.

Looks like someone didnt pass their geography class. It's far more closer for Iran to do it from within their own borders or from Iraq/Syria.

This statement by Netanyahu falls into Saudi interest. More pressure more green light for heavy military engagement.

There are several angles to it, one we need to get out of the way is that 'Mr. Security' is also defense minister of Israel ever since Lieberman resigned. So he has to show to his people that he is on top of the challenges to Israel. The other is the major protests in Iraq and Lebanon and breakdown of the nuclear deal with Iran. Israeli's likely are worried that Iran will restore enrichment levels to those prior to the nuclear deal. And they are also worried Hezbollah may attack Israel to prevent a crisis in Lebanon. Or Iran will attack Saudi Arabia if the situation in Iraq spirals further out of control and the US sanctions aren't lifted.

So he is worried about overall regional situation. The protests, the US sanctions, the oil tanker war, etc....

If there is going to be a war with Iran, then there needs to be a post war plan for the region overall. To address rest of issues in the region, such as lack of confidence in governments, widespread demonstrations and also civil strife.

I doubt there will be a war with Iran but if it happens, it wont last longer.

One consequence of war would be free Sistan.
