Pakistan army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa will visit the Maldives later this week, The Wire reported on 26 March. If the reports are confirmed, Bajwa’s visit will be the first by a high-ranking official to Maldives since the 45-day-long state of emergency was lifted in the archipelago.
The Wire, quoted diplomatic sources as saying that Bajwa would arrive in Malé on 31 March. The Maldivian government, however, has made no official announcements about the visit.
If the visit comes through, this will be the Bajwa’s first visit to the archipelago since his appointment as the army chief of Pakistan in November 2016.
The Wire, quoted sources as saying that President Abdulla Yameen was “keen on a visit” from the Pakistani army chief, adding however, that news of his visit has raised a few eyebrows.
Following the declaration of emergency, the Maldives sent special envoys to Pakistan, China and Saudi Arabia. The nation had said at the time that it had offered to send envoys to India, but said the “dates were not suitable for the Indian foreign ministry.”
