Pakistan has done enough for everyone, will not do more: DG ISPR

The chief military spokesman on Thursday chose not to respond to the allegations levelled by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif that the army was involved in his ouster.
At a media briefing, Major General Asif Ghafoor, the Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) refused to answer a question about Sharif’s indirect accusation that the army was a part of a plot against him and his government.
“We will continue to have silence on this,’ the DG ISPR said.
Ghafoor said it was the duty of the army to stabilise the region. India, he said, has been spreading false propaganda but “Pakistan will not be reactive to such false lies anymore”. He stressed: “You cannot lure us to your unprofessional tactics.”
Ghafoor said that Indian propaganda is only for its own media. “India wants to divert attention from its atrocities in occupied Kashmir but Pakistan will continue fighting for the right of the Kashmiri people.”
Speaking about the US demand of ‘doing more’ the military spokesman stated unequivocally that Pakistan had done enough for everyone over the decades and would not do more.
DG ISPR ‘disappointed’ by Ahsan’s statement, ‘stands by’ his comments
“We cannot do more on the dictation from any country,” he said. “We don’t want conflict with friends but we will ensure country’s defence,” he said, adding that the Pakistan would fight against terrorism, but not for money.
About the Haqqani network, Ghafoor stated there was no organised terror network inside Pakistan. “The US and Afghan authorities are well aware that Pakistan tackled the Haqqanis too. They [allegations of safe havens] are no more valid.”
On the relations with Afghanistan, the military spokesman stressed the need for bilateral military-to-military engagement. “I won’t say the engagement is ideal but there has been an improvement after army chief’s visit to Afghanistan,” he said.
Through Zarb-e-Azb, he went on to say, Pakistan has tried to eliminate terrorism and would continue these efforts. “We have dismantled all terror networks in Fata,” he added.
Major General Asif Ghafoor told reporters that most of the suicide bombers were from Afghanistan. He also said that a large number of attacks have been foiled.
“Thanks to our intelligence agencies, we have been able to avert 483 attacks in 2017 alone,” he stated, “of which 254 were averted in K-P and Fata.” Expressing his gratitude to the intelligence agencies, he said, “People don’t know about the attacks averted because those are never really discussed.”
Major General Asif Ghafoor emphasised media’s vital role in this “fifth-generation” war. “We have established state’s writ across the country. The law and order situation has evidently improved, particularly in Karachi.”
About India’s reaction to convicted spy Kulbhushan Jadhav’s meeting with his family, he said: “India will never appreciate Pakistan. Good acts of Pakistan still continue to receive negative treatment in India,” he said.
“A spy, who is an established terrorist, was given a chance to meet his family on humanitarian ground. This should have been appreciated. But India will never do that,” he added.
Rejecting India’s claim that the Pakistan was under pressure to allow the Jadhav family meeting, he said there was no pressure regarding Jadhav. If there was pressure, “we would have agreed to consular access” he said, adding: “It [the meeting] was purely on humanitarian ground.”
Responding to a question regarding the conspiracy surrounding shoes of Jadhav’s wife, the ISPR chief stated that the Foreign Office had told India in advance to keep in mind the current the geo-political scenario when the family arrived in Pakistan.
Faizabad
When asked that a Rangers official distributed envelopes among the Faizabad protesters, he said that it was done on the instructions of the Prime minister’s Office.
“A two-star officer was handed the responsibility of resolving the [Faizabad protest] issue. In the hindsight, there are many comments on the matter. But it was a sensitive issue and was done on the PM’s instructions.”
In a lighter vein, he added, “Do you really think we are so naive that we would give Rs1,000 to the protestors? It was done to normalise the situation. That’s what is important.”
The DG ISPR took a jibe at Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal, who on the order of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, immediately sent over 100 cases to the military courts.
Ghafoor however, saif that Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa’s had drawn the Prime Minister’s attention towards a slump in transfer of cases to the military courts.
“As far as military courts are concerned, the first tenure was successful. In the second tenure, the interior minister passed more than 100 cases in November,” he said.
Ghafoor said that the military has formulated a specific section in the army for the physical protection of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). “Our job relating to CPEC is only with regards to security.”
Socio-economic developments
DG ISPR also briefed the media about the socio-economic developments in K-P and Fata, “schemes of 800-km roads were planned by the army for Fata and K-P, out of which 730 kms have been completed, and the rest will be too,” he said with pride.
