PT Dirgantara Indonesia has revealed its MALE UAV prototype for the first time to the public in its latest Instagram Post. The program has been reported in various mainstream Indonesian media since 2016, the time where the preliminary design is started. The program reached detail design phase in 2018 and is designed to have maximum endurance of 30 hours and can fly into altitude 30.000 feet.

According to the PT DI engineer involved in the program, the development will be done in 4 phase (Block) in which the first block (Block 0) is only mean to test its flying performance, second block (Block L) is plan to have indigenous mission system developed by PT LEN Industry, third block (Block D) will be installed with ISR (Intelligent, Surveilance, Reconnaisance) mission system. Fourth block (Block C-Combat) will have attack capability.

Expected Maiden Flight is the end of 2020 or beginning of 2021. First and second block still use fixed landing gear while third and fourth block will use retractable landing gear where landing gear can be inserted into the plane body.

It will be developed into 4 phase (block). Third block (Block O) only have ISR (Intelligent, Surveilance, Reconnaisance) mission and the fourth block (Block C) will be armed according to the plan.

This program is conducted by a consortium which consist of BPPT (Government Research Agency), PT Dirgantara Indonesia, LAPAN (Space agency that IMO will make SAR radar for this drone), PT LEN Industry who is responsible in developing mission system and flight control for this drone, Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesian Airforce, and Ministry of Defense.

Today the UAV has been rolled out and introduce to public formally.

Indonesia Introduces First Medium Range Drone to Tackle Terrorism, Forest Fires
BY :ANTARA
DECEMBER 30, 2019

Bandung. Indonesia's state-owned aerospace company Dirgantara Indonesia introduced on Monday two prototypes of new medium-altitude long endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (MALE UAV) designed for both civilian and military uses.

The drone will help the government ward off territorial threats from the archipelago and keep an eye on potential threats including smuggling, terrorism and natural resource thefts, the company claimed.

"Its first flight is targeted to be carried out next year. As of now, we are still undergoing the manufacturing development process," Dirgantara president director Elfien Goentoro said at the company's Rotary Wing Hangar in Bandung, West Java.

The MALE UAV requires a 700-meter runway for takeoff and landing. It is capable of cruising to up to 20,000 feet at the highest speed of 235 kilometers per hour. It can also stay in the air for up to 30 hours. In its development, the aircraft will be armed with missiles as well, he said.

Dirgantara, which also produces small propeller aircraft, is developing two prototypes for flight and structural tests at the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology, or BPPT, with an aim to get a certification by 2024.

The military version of the drone will require a separate certification from the Ministry of Defense, expected by the end of 2021.
The MALE UAV also aims to tackle the country's perennial issue of forest fires through forest and land supervision.

"Forest fires occur every year and they require a continuous supervision on cloud, climate, hotspots and the water level of peatlands," BPPT head Hammam Riza said.

Its synthetic aperture radar, or SAR, can detect water content of up to 30 cm under the surface level. The detected lands in need of moisture can then be watered to prevent forest fires and hotspots, Hammam said.

Indonesia’s PT Len to develop UAV mission systems

Jon Grevatt, Bangkok - Jane's Defence Industry

03 February 2020

The Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed an agreement with local company PT Len Industri to support the production of mission systems for the country’s indigenously developed Elang Hitam (Black Eagle) medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

The MoD said the contract, signed on 30 January, will see PT Len Industri develop, produce, and integrate key systems into the strike-capable Elang Hitam UAV by 2023.

The work under the deal, the value of which was not disclosed, includes the “detailed design engineering” of the UAV; “technology acquisition documents” that will outline the technologies needed for mass production; “hardware in the loop” reviews and testing; and production of the UAV’s ground control station.

3 drones related programs have entered Indonesia National Strategic Program. Just been announced 1 week ago. All of them I believe related with MALE UAV program in which one program is related to making 3 prototypes and testing it and the other two programs are related to its subsystems development.
