Qatar says invited to emergency Arab summits in Makkah by Saudi King

  • Last week Qatar said it had not been invited to the two summits Saudi is planning in Islam’s holiest site
CAIRO: Qatar has been invited by Saudi Arabia to attend two emergency Arab summits being convened in the Saudi city of Makkah on May 30, Qatar’s foreign ministry said on Sunday, after previously saying it had not been.

Last week Qatar said it had not been invited to the two summits Saudi Arabia is planning in Islam’s holiest site to discuss the implications of drone strikes on oil installations in the kingdom and attacks on four vessels, including two Saudi oil tankers, off the UAE coast earlier this month.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt have imposed an economic and diplomatic boycott on Qatar since June 2017 over allegations that Doha supports terrorism and is cosying up to regional foe Iran. Qatar denies the charges.

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani received an invitation from Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to attend the summit of Gulf
Arab rulers and a wider meeting of Arab leaders, the Qatari Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The invitation and a letter was passed to Qatar by the head of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the statement said, without saying whether Qatar would accept it.

Qatar PM to make rare trip to Saudi Arabia for emergency summit
May 29, 2019

DOHA (Reuters) - Qatar’s prime minister will attend an Arab summit in Saudi Arabia to discuss regional security, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, the highest level Qatari official to visit the kingdom during a diplomatic rift.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt imposed an economic and diplomatic boycott on Qatar in June 2017 over allegations that Doha supports terrorism, a charge Qatar denies.

The emergency summit in Mecca, Islam’s holiest city, on Thursday will discuss tensions with Iran following attacks on oil tankers off the coast of the United Arab Emirates and drone strikes on oil pumping stations in Saudi Arabia, both of which Tehran denies involvement in.

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani had received an invitation from Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud earlier this week to attend both the summit of Gulf Arab rulers and a wider meeting of Arab leaders.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Lolwah Al-Khater said in a tweet that Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani would attend the summits, writing that the region’s quickly escalating tensions made high-level participation a “national and humanitarian duty to achieve collective security”.

The United States has been trying to unify the Gulf bloc in order to confront Iran, although it was not immediately clear whether the visit was a sign of a thaw in the two-year dispute.

U.S. national security adviser John Bolton said on Wednesday that naval mines “almost certainly from Iran” were used to attack the tankers, and warned Tehran against conducting new operations.

GCC are basically acting like bullies to their small neighbor. They thought they could do it, until Turkey and Iran stepped in to neutralize the situation.
Which countries are part of GCC? And why are the fighting each other?
What do they want to achieve?

They want Qatar to tow the Saudi-UAE line and know their place. But Qatar refused and made friends with Turkey instead. And paid protection money to France, UK and the US.

Pls do not make statements without knowing ground realities. Pls look up what are the points to let Qatar back into the GCC, the biggest issue is it renouncing meddling in other states affairs. Why has Qatar been unable to renounce this till now?

Turkey who wants to be the leader of the Ummah yet fails to shut down genel evler / state run brothels, and then Iran, the biggest exporter of terrorism! WOW, simply wow! If these came to the rescue of any country, it would actually be shameful for that country.

Nonetheless, Tamim is out of the country since the coup attempts. The Coup leader is negotiating a smooth transition, when that happens both these hypocrites i.e. Turkey and Iran, will be out.

"Meddling in other states affairs" is a hypocritical demand by UAE and Saudi - two states busy everywhere meddling as they please. Let's try to be objective here.

We are being objective, but you seemed to be hell bent upon being a cheerleader for Turkey and Qatar, so be it.

Not IF, but WHEN the Regime change happens in Qatar, I will love to see the look on your face.

UAE, Qatar officials meet in Kuwait amid Gulf thaw

Kuwait hosted delegations from the two countries more than a month after Saudi Arabia and its allies agreed to end their blockade on Qatar.

Kuwait hosted officials from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on Monday in their first such meeting since the Gulf states ended their yearslong rift with Doha, the Emirati state news agency reported.

Saudi Arabia and its allies Bahrain, the UAE and Egypt severed ties with gas-rich Qatar in June 2017, accusing their neighbor of funding terrorism and growing too close to Iran and Turkey.

Doha denies supporting terrorist groups but admits to backing Islamist movements including Egypt’s outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. Qatar, a tiny peninsula in the Persian Gulf, refused to comply with the Quartet’s 13 conditions for lifting the blockade, which included cutting ties with Tehran and shutting down the Qatari-funded Al Jazeera TV network.

After more than three years of Qatar’s diplomatic and economic isolation, the Saud-led bloc reached a “solidarity and stability” pact with Doha during the annual summit of the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council, which was held in the Saudi desert city of Al-Ula in January.

According to the Emirati state news agency WAM, the Emirati and Qatari delegations in Kuwait on Monday “discussed joint mechanisms and procedures for implementing the Al-Ula statement.”

“They emphasized the importance of preserving Gulf kinship and developing joint Gulf action in the interest of GCC countries and their citizens, and of achieving stability and prosperity in the region,” WAM said, without specifying who from each country was in attendance.

The agency said the two delegations praised Riyadh for hosting the January summit and thanked Kuwait for its mediation efforts.

Since restoring ties, Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has announced the resumption of flights to Doha, and Qatar Airways is now flying to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. In early January, the UAE opened its air, sea and land ports to Qatar.

Qatar has to act responsibility and do not flue the matter otherwise things might go wrong. The world cup is hosted in Qatar next year, Qatar needs logistic supplies from KSA and UAE. Plus it wont be good if airspace restriction comes to the picture again.
