DUBAI: The UAE on Monday said Qatari fighter jets had intercepted a civilian passenger plane en route to Bahrain in a “clear violation of international law.”
“Qatari fighter jets intercepted an Emirati civilian aircraft during a routine flight to Manama in a flagrant threat to civil aviation safety and in a clear violation of international law,” UAE General Authority of Civil Aviation said in a statement published by the state news agency WAM.
The GCAA received a message from one of the UAE’s national carriers on Monday morning stating that one of its aircraft on a flight to Manama had been intercepted by Qatari jets.
The flight was a scheduled service, on a known flight-path that met all the required and internationally recognized approvals and permits, WAM reported.
But a Qatari foreign ministry official later denied the claim according to news reports.
And Sheikh Saif Bin Ahmed al-Thani, the director of Qatar’s government communications office, said on his official Twitter account that the charge was “completely untrue.”
The UAE is one of four Arab states that cut all ties with Qatar in June for funding terrorist groups.
On Friday, Qatar filed a complaint with the United Nations about an alleged violation of its airspace in December by an Emirati military aircraft.
Qatari authorities said the violation on Dec. 21, which the UAE denied, lasted one minute.

Qatari fighter jets on Monday intercepted a UAE passenger plane flying to Manama, the Emirates' General Authority of Civil Aviation said.

The GCAA said it received a message from a national carrier on Monday morning that one of its aircraft had been intercepted by the jets.

The state-run Wam news agency said the flight was a regular, scheduled service and travelling on a known flight path that met all required and internationally recognised approvals and permits.

"The United Arab Emirates rejects this threat to the safety of air traffic and will take all the necessary legal measures to ensure the safety and security of its civil aviation," the GCAA said.

It was not immediately clear how the Qatari jets intercepted the plane.

The GCAA said the incident was under investigation.

A Qatari foreign ministry official quoted by Al Jazeera denied Qatari fighter planes had intercepted the plane, Reuters reported.

Bahrain condemns hostile act against UAE civilian aircraft
Manama affirms full support for UAE measures to maintain security, stability
January 15, 2018

Manama: Bahrain's foreign ministry on Monday "strongly" condemned the interception by Qatari fighter jets of an UAE carrier on a routine scheduled flight (Emirates Flight 837) to Bahrain.

The interception is a blatant violation of international conventions and laws issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention) drafted in 1944, the ministry said in a statement it posted on its website.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirms that this hostile behaviour by Qatar against civil aircraft has become frequent in recent times, jeopardises the safety of civil aviation and poses a threat to the lives of civilians," the statement said.

The ministry stresses Bahrain's support for the UAE and for all measures it takes to protect its security and stability and to deter and put an end to these violations by Qatar, the statement added.

Earlier, UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) had reported that a national carrier aircraft was intercepted by Qatari fighter jets during a routine trip to Manama.

The authority said that it received a complaint today from the national carrier, and described the act as a flagrant and dangerous threat to the safety of civil aviation, as well as a blatant violation of international laws and agreements.

The authority pointed out that the flight was a routine scheduled flight, and that its route is well known and complies with international norms concerning approvals and permits.

The GCAA stressed that the UAE rejects this threat to the safety civil aviation movement, and will take all necessary legal measures to ensure the safety and safety of civil aviation movement.

The flight was a scheduled service, on a known flight-path that met all the required and internationally recognized approvals and permits. This is a clear breach to the ICAO a UN agency. Qatar with its small size, have no air space beyond its border and small army would never think of doing such a thing. This is somebody's else idea for sure.

Bahrain: Qatari violation jeopardizes lives of passengers and flight safety

Tuesday, 16 January 2018
Last Update: Tuesday, 16 January 2018 KSA 00:43 - GMT 21:43

Bahrain strongly condemned the interception by Qatari fighter jets of a civilian aircraft from the UAE to Bahrain during its normal flight on Monday morning.

Qatari fighter jets intercepted an Emirates Flight, EK837, while flying on its normal routes, Bahrain News Agency (BNA) said.

The Kingdom’s Foreign Ministry described the incident as a clear violation of international conventions and laws.

“We will take necessary measures with international bodies for Qatar to face the consequences of these violations,” the Bahraini government said.

The ministry added that this rejected hostile behavior by Qatar against civil aircraft, which has become frequent recently, jeopardizes the safety of civil aviation and poses a threat to the lives of civilians.

A second incident as well on Monday on Etihad flight EY23B from Abu Dhabi International Airport to Bahrain International Airport. The second incident is under investigation, BNA reported.

UAE to file UN complaint on Qatar's interception of Emirati planes
Emirates says Doha violated the Chicago Convention, which governs the use of airspace
The National
January 16, 2018
Updated: January 17, 2018 03:58 PM

The UAE said on Tuesday it would file a complaint against Qatar at the UN aviation agency after Qatari jets intercepted two Emirati civilian aircraft.

The Emirates would accuse Doha of violating the Chicago Convention, which governs the use of airspace, in a formal complaint to the International Civil Aviation Organisation, said Saif Al Suwaidi, director general of the UAE's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GCAA).

Qatari fighter jets intercepted two UAE passenger planes in international airspace that were heading to Bahrain on Monday morning.

Mr Al Suwaidi said the jets twice flew close to the airliners as they descended towards Bahrain International Airport in separate incidents on Monday, and could be seen by the pilots and passengers.

“The Qatari fighter jets flew dangerously close to the UAE airliners and were about 400 feet away from the aircraft,” he said, according to Sky News Arabia.

He also said Bahraini radar determined the fighter jets took off and returned to Doha. Mr Al Suwaidi would not disclose which UAE airlines had been affected, but Bahrain’s state news agency BNA reported on Monday that one of the flights was Emirates and the other Etihad.

Bahrain’s state television aired radar footage on Tuesday it described as showing Emirates flight EK837 travelling from Dubai towards Bahrain International Airport at 3,170 metres and two other radar signals, described as Qatari fighter jets, flying at around 2,590 metres. The radar screen briefly flashed orange text, likely a collision warning.

The broadcaster also aired footage of an aeronautical chart that showed a Qatari fighter jet flying across the flight path of a just-passed airliner that flew direct from Abu Dhabi to Bahrain.

Mohammed Thamer Al Kaabi, undersecretary of Bahrain's ministry of civil aviation affairs, said Manama had already "filed a report to the International Civil Aviation Organisation about the two separate incidents".

Mr Al Suwaidi also said the UAE could consider re-touring its flights as a precautionary step, reported Reuters.

Asked if the UAE would consider escorting civilian aircraft, he said the Emirates could "use different tools to protect its airlines". He did not elaborate.

Saudi Arabia condemned Monday’s interception of the two airlines, saying Qatar’s action was considered “a threat to the safety of civil aviation and in violation of international laws and conventions”.

An official source at the Saudi ministry of foreign affairs said the flights were “regular, scheduled, with a well-known route that meets the approval of internationally recognised permits”, reported the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

Both planes landed safely in Manama and were able to complete their return flights to the UAE without incident.

Mr Al Suwaidi also said the flights were regular services and that Qatar had shown no prior objection to their routes.

He did not elaborate on the details of the encounters but said the Qatari jets had acted in a dangerous manner and put the lives of innocent civilians at risk.

Qatar denied it intercepted the planes.

Monday’s incident could further escalate tensions between Qatar and the four Arab countries that have been boycotting it since June last year.

Last week, Doha twice accused Emirati fighter jets of violating Qatari airspace. Following the first claim, Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, said Doha's accusation was "untrue and confused".

On Tuesday, Yacoub Al Hosani, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, said the UAE Permanent Mission to the United Nations had delivered the Emirates' official response to Qatar's allegations to the UN Security Council.

The Ministry "confirms that the military aircraft was outside Qatari airspace" and it condemns Qatar's efforts to escalate the situation, reported the UAE's state-run news agency, Wam. It added that the Ministry urged Doha to abide by international laws.

Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt cut diplomatic and transport ties with Qatar in June last year over allegations it supports extremist groups and has interfered in the affairs of other countries.

UAE military to fly alternative routes to avoid Qatari jet contact
By Arabian Business
27 January 2018
UAE military aircraft are to fly alternative routes over Saudi Arabia in an effort to avoid contact with Qatari fighter jets which intercepted two passenger planes earlier this month.

UAE Air Force Brigadier General Helal Saeed Al Qubaisi said in comments published by state news agency WAM that Qatari provocative practices will not affect traffic of the UAE military aircraft.

"We have directives from our leadership not to escalate the situation in response to the Qatari provocation in order to maintain regional peace and stability and ensure the safety of the international air navigation and lives of passengers and air crews. However, we will follow all legal international measures and channels against Qatari practices," he was quoted as saying.

He added that the UAE has renewed its rejection and condemnation of the Qatari practices of "targeting military and civilian aviation and threatening regional security and peace".

Al Qubaisi claimed Qatari jets had intercepted UAE military aircraft flying over the Arabian Gulf, in addition to the passenger planes.

He also denounced "Qatar's twisting of facts and fabrication of false allegations".

The UAE said on Thursday it had submitted a note to the presidents of the UN Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly after Qatari jets came within little more than 3km of Emirati passenger flights.

The move, in accordance with the provisions of the UN Charter, following Qatar's "threat to the lives of civilians" during the incidents on January 15.

The note submitted by the UAE describes "irresponsible behaviour by the State of Qatar" and an "unjustifiable escalation and threat to the safety of civil flights" in contravention of international law.
