Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul said he plans to prevent the renewal of U.S. anti-terrorism programs when the Senate holds a rare Sunday session in a last-ditch effort to extend expiring surveillance rules.

“I will force the expiration of the NSA illegal spy program,” Kentucky’s Paul said in a statement Saturday. “I am ready and willing to start the debate on how we fight terrorism without giving up our liberty.”

The confrontation Sunday would cap a week in which Paul, who like any senator can block legislation from moving forward, has attempted to stymie procedural measures to renew the programs. He asked supporters in an e-mail Friday to join him in opposing National Security Agency spying, before three surveillance provisions of the USA Patriot Act run out at 12:01 a.m. Monday.

Politicians will do anything to make voters believe they have their [the voter's] best interests at heart. Time has proved again and again that they can and do change their minds overnight.

But . . . whether the Patriot Act is renewed or amended, whoever thinks the government needs anyone's permission to spy on them is mistaken. Rand Paul knows this.

The Patriot Act did expire. He was successful. Fortunately, its being replaced by the Freedom Act. They wouldn't put the word freedom in it if it wasn't something good, right? Lol

In the interests of National Security as always . . .

In any case considering the fact that spying has gone high tech, how will anyone tell that the NSA or some other security agents are spying on them?

You probably won't. I applaud Rand Paul for standing up for what he and so many Americans believe is right. Whether he is truly successful or not is not in his control, but he did the right thing there, and honored the people's wishes. That's all we can ask of our elected officials. The system is way beyond anything we can hope to control anyway.
