Saudi Arabia announces UAV procurement
28 April 2020

Intra representatives told Jane's at the Dubai Airshow last year that the company was primarily orienting its marketing efforts for the Karayel towards the Saudi military, and potentially exporting the platform to Brazil and Kuwait.
Uhummm I don't think Brazil will import much more drones. It is cheaper to produce them locally. This area was kinda of neglected by the armed forces, but recently some companies in Brazil has taken in interest in drones. Drones are more simple to make and Brazil have a big aero industry that will probably start making their own military drones soon. With them is much easier to patrol gigantic areas, like the Amazon, with a lower cost.

Here is one of the projects of a VTOL drone that was recently released in Brasil. One of the companies making this one is Turbomachine, the same that helped with the TKF-500 engine some comments above. And big companies like Embraer might one day enter this makert too. There are others, but his one has unusual looks, so I decided to post him hehe.

We had some good news about the Brazilian military industry this year. The Gripen, KC-390, the launch of a hypersonic platform, submarines, missiles. It is nice to see some good news after a long economic recession.

There you go. Last week Embraer said they will enter the military drones market. I didn't expect my prediction to turn in reality so fast hehe

Saudi signs for further AWACS upgrade

17 December 2021
by Gareth Jennings

The Royal Saudi Air Force fields five E-3 AWACS aircraft, which it will now upgrade under the RSAF AWACS Modernization Program Phase 2. (Boeing)

Saudi Arabia is to further modernise its fleet of Boeing E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft, with a USD397.9 million contract awarded to the original equipment manufacturer on 16 December.

The Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) AWACS Modernization Program Phase 2 award will see all five aircraft upgraded in the United States and Saudi Arabia till 21 February 2026.

“This contract provides for production, training, and installation and checkout, in order to keep the RSAF E-3 AWACS fleet interoperable with the US Air Force (USAF) and functionally viable through its expected end of life in 2040,” the US Department of Defense said in its contract notification, noting that the work involves 100% Foreign Military Sales funding.

Boeing delivered Saudi Arabia's AWACS aircraft between June 1986 and September 1987. As noted in the announcement, Saudi Arabia's AWACS modernisation is part of a wider effort to keep pace with the technological improvement being implemented for the USAF's fleet of 31 aircraft.

According to a tweet posted by Defense Arab on October 24, French company Nexter Systems has been requested by Saudi Arabia to present a quotation for an impressive amount of artillery systems and military vehicles: 118 towed 105LG 105mm howitzers, 147 CAESAR 6x6 155mm self-propelled howitzers, 112 CAESAR 8x8 155mm armored self-propelled howitzers, and 153 TITUS wheeled armored vehicles.
It is not specified whether all the equipment would actually be ordered, or whether this is a comparative request between the 105LG to be towed by 6x6 Titus, CAESAR 6x6 and CAESAR 8x8 systems (as a reminder, CAESAR stands for Camion Equipé d’un Système d’ARtillerie, Truck Equipped with an ARtillery System). The CAESAR 6x6, and its heavy-duty armored 8x 8 version, continue to attract potential users. Saudi Arabia was the first export customer of this outstanding (a benchmarker, actually), with two orders for 76 units in 2006, and 52 units later.

The Saudi army operates five artillery battalions: the 14th Field Artillery Battalion (155m towed howitzers), the 15th Field Artillery Battalion (MLRS), and the 18th Missile Battalion (MLRS).

Saudi industry to produce THAAD air defense subsystems

Mar 10, 2022

In the first program of its kind in Saudi Arabia, a local organization is teaming with American firm Lockheed Martin to produce parts for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system.

During the World Defense Show in Riyadh, which took place March 6-9, the General Authority for Military Industries, or GAMI, announced it approved two local projects for the THAAD air defense system: the first for manufacturing missile interceptor launchers, and the second for producing the missile interceptor canisters.

In October 2017, the U.S. State Department approved a foreign military sale to Saudi Arabia for THAAD and related support, equipment and services for an estimated cost of $15 billion. About a year later, in November 2018, the kingdom signed a letter of offer and acceptance with the United States for Lockheed’s THAAD.

The projects are part of Saudi Arabia’s effort to domestically spend 50% of its money set aside for defense equipment and services by the year 2030, according to a statement by GAMI.

“Along this localization journey, and with the robust relations with our international defense partners, air domain defense readiness is expected to be greatly enhanced,” said Gasem Al-Maimani, GAMI’s deputy governor, said in a statement.

“Lockheed Martin is engaged with its Saudi partners across several capacity-building programs that are formulated to contribute to the realization of the country’s development goals. This announcement will significantly boost global and regional security while supporting job creation and economic prosperity in Saudi Arabia,” said Joseph Rank, chief executive for Lockheed Martin in Saudi Arabia and Africa.

During the inaugural World Defense Show, GAMI said, it signed 22 industrial partnerships with domestic and international defense companies, for a total value of 29.7 billion riyals (U.S. $7.9 billion). The agreements included the direct purchase of military systems, the building of production lines, the transfer of know-how and training, and the localization of technologies and services. Saudi companies are involved in 46% of the total value of deals made during the show.

Neither Lockheed Martin nor GAMI responded to Defense News’ inquiries for further information.
